All of the work I do in my practice is underpinned by mindfulness. Mindfulness is having it’s day in the sun in the media, with articles in the Saturday papers and everywhere we look. As this graph shows there has been an exponential rise in research into Mindfulness over the past 15 years. We are learning a great deal about the impact of mindfulness practice on humans. I like to think of mindfulness as interchangeable with the words self awareness. Having a formal mindful practice has given me the tools for developing much greater self awareness.
Mindfulness is not new. What’s new is the strong scientific base that has been established and demonstrates that mindful practice changes the structure and function of our brains. More powerfully though is the evidence in peoples’ lives. People do not only experience mindfulness in their brains - in their heads. People experience mindfulness, or the outcomes of mindfulness practice, in their whole bodies and in their perception of the world. Two factors, our willingness to tell others that we have a mindful practice (e.g."I meditate") and the actual impact the practice is having on us, means that mindfulness has come out of the closet so to speak! Many more people are sharing their stories of how mindfulness has changed their experience of their daily life. In my life, daily mindful meditation has supported me through the darkest grief, helped me be a better more available parent, a gentler person with myself about my own short comings and expectations, have much better focus and clarity of purpose. Mostly people say they started their mindfulness practice to feel better - healthier or happier, or to improve their performance. Mindfulness practice is about being present to whatever is, it is in learning to be with our whole experience and this of course is a life long adventure!
If you are interested in mindfulness at your workplace or individually there are a range of ways I can help you, from a half hour introductory presentation, individual coaching, half or full day workshops to Corporate Based Mindfulness Training (CBMT) 10 weeks course. https://potentialproject.com/country/australia/
It was such an honour to host the GHS through our charity organisation Good Practice Good Health Inc. (GPGH) in March. Many of the people attending were excited to learn about how they can improve their health through lifestyle choices and by communicating really well with their health practitioners.
Did you know that there is a relationship between a more open relationship with your health care provider, that is more empathic, and your health outcomes (how quickly you get better)? Many health professionals and people who use health care services shared amazing stories of their work in making health care more patient centred. You can read my reflections of the 2017 GHShere.
GPGH Inc. exists to improve communication in the health system between patients and their families and health professionals, and between the various health professional crafts. If you would liketo know when GPGH is hosting an event please sign up to the newsletteror follow GPGH on Facebook
