FROM JULIE

News from April!

We hope you have had a great start to term 2!

First of all, a huge congratulations must go to our Anzac Day Commemoration Choir with their conductor Jenny Moon and accompanist Justine Favell! If you saw the performance at the Anzac Day Dawn Service on Tuesday, i'm sure you would agree our young choristers performed beautifully. They represented Australia and Birralee in the best possible way in honouring our Anzacs and should be very proud of their achievements. If you didn't get the chance to follow the trip via our blogs, you can catch up here

We're now looking forward to May and have a number of fantastic events planned. First of all our youngest ensembles, the Birralee Piccolos and Kids will take the stage for their first concert of the year supported by Brisbane Birralee Voices at our Cupcake & Cushion Concert. This will be held on Sunday 14 May as a special Mother's Day Tribute! Make sure you grab your tickets now from The Old Museum

Later this month we will hold Concert Two of the Voices from the Trenches Choral Festival at Toowoomba's Empire Theatre, featuring the Birralee Blokes and the Brisbane Birralee Voices. We hope you can join us for this very special event, featuring a number of school and community choirs from the Toowoomba region.

Finally, next Wednesday marks the launch of the 2017 Queensland Youth Music Awards. I'm sure we'll see a number of you during the circuit as we celebrate the competition's 50th year!

Until next time,

Julie Christiansen OAM
Founder & Artistic Director

Thank you to Major Andrew Cullen
A huge thank you to Major Andrew Cullen (Retired) for being our guest speaker at our Anzac Day Commemoration Choir's Dedication Service & Concert in early April. He delivered an engaging and inspiring speech which we're sure will stay in our choristers' and attendees' minds for a long time! This week Andrew launched his book, Resurrected which you can check it out and order here

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MEMBERS
ON OUR YOUNG ADULT CHORISTERS
Bree Gillies, 28, Music Teacher
Resonance of Birralee

When did you join Voices of Birralee and why?
I joined Resonance straight after I finished school. Paul Holley was my choral conductor throughout high school and I followed him to his young adult choir, Resonance. That was 11 years ago. I joined as I wanted to not only continue to sing, but also to continue to sing with a choral conductor I already had so much respect for.

Favourite songs of the repertoire? It's truly hard to say, however, I always have a soft spot for Dan Walker's pieces. Also, True Light which we took on tour to Gratz, Austria was an awesome piece.

What do you enjoy about singing at Birralee? The connections that are made. I have made so many life-long friends through Biralee and these are the friends who I have now seen get married and have children. Nothing beats that! Also, I enjoy talking with musically minded professionals who have gravitated to the organisation. It is invaluable being able to talk, learn and gather ideas from some of the best conductors and choral masterminds in brisbane, as well as chat to up and coming music educators about their experiences as well. It is just so rewarding.

Why do you sing and where do you plan on taking your music? I sing for the joy of singing. While I may create music as part of my job with students, it is something else to partake in the making of music under someone else's direction.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR YOUNG CHORISTERS
Eliza Alloway, 6, Birralee Piccolos

When did you join Voices of Birralee and why? Because I love singing!

Favourite songs? Cows in the Kitchen and Little Kitten

What do you enjoy about singing with Birralee? I love it when we go over to sing with the big kids. I love that we get to do actions when we sing. I love being in the big concerts because I like wearing my special blue vest, the white shirt and black pants. I love that the mums and dads can come and watch.

Why do you sing? Singing makes me feel excited. I will keep on going with singing. I also learn violin and piano and sometimes my big sister lets me have a turn on her viola. I really want to be an 'author of music'.

We've re-launched our Facebook community group allowing our Birralee Members, and those closely connected with our organisation, to buy, swap or sell items that are related to our music interests.

This is a great platform to connect as a community and to sell any unneeded uniforms, or instruments, and lots more. Before posting in the group, please review the terms of use, and view the group
