NIRA ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF THE 2017 .NG AWARDS

st April, 2017 was a big day for the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) and its stakeholders. At the 2017 .ng Awards night, big time winners were announced for the different categories. The .ng Awards ceremony held at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos.
For the records, there were a total of 130 nominees for the 20 different award categories that received the 33,232 different votes from the 16,075 voters. For the Presidential awards, there were 11 recipients for the 5 different award categories. It was a fun evening for all, from the Xplicit dancers from Ibadan to the Nigerian Police Band based in Lagos who thrilled with music to Hilarious Chinedu (formerly Skool Boy), the comedian. The audience, gorgeously kitted, thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
The .ng Awards celebrate the achievements and innovation of Nigerian Internet initiatives. The awards promote Nigerian businesses, individuals, charity, public and private sector organizations which help to make the Internet a more secure, open, accessible and rewarding experience for all.

Stakeholder Consultation Portal for Establishment of an Internet Industry Code of Practice

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) issued invitations to all affected and interested parties as well as the General Public to its Stakeholder Consultation on the establishment of an Internet Industry Code of Practice.
As part of its Internet Governance functions, the Nigerian Communications Commission seeks input from stakeholders in the development of a code of practice in support of net neutrality and an open Internet. The Commission favours a multi-stakeholder model of engagement in the process of policy development for Internet Governance.
NCC has indicated that the objectives of the Internet Industry Code of Practice seek to:
- Protect the rights and interests of Internet Service Providers and consumers;
- Provide jointly agreed and effective solutions to the issues of discriminatory traffic management practices;
- Ensure adequate safeguards are put in place by service providers against abuses such as unsolicited messages;
- Outline the obligations of Service Providers in relation to offensive and potentially harmful content for minors and vulnerable audiences;
- Promote the safe, secure and responsible use of Internet Services with due regard to provisions in existing legal instruments;
- Establish best practices for Internet Governance in Nigeria, in line with emerging issues and global trends;
- Provide transparent rules for the assessment and classification of Internet content;
- Increase stakeholder satisfaction through improved consumer experience online;
- Improve competition by addressing issues of traffic management;
- Improve operational efficiency.

Candidates for NextGen@ICANN59

ICANN has announced that 15 individuals from various African universities have been selected to attend the ICANN59 Policy Forum. The Forum would hold from 26
th to 29
th June 2017 at Johannesburg, South Africa. In their various universities, these students are studying a wide range of topics, including policy, computer science, technology, law and communications. Five additional selectees who attended a previous ICANN meeting as NextGenners will now serve as ambassadors for these newcomers.
Individuals were assessed by an independent selection committee. The successful candidates were selected based on their current studies and demonstration of interest in the work happening in the Internet ecosystem. The ongoing work in the Internet ecosystem refers to global policy and Internet governance.
