“Preserving Our Heritage, Preparing For the Future”
by Jack Carpenter, Campaign Chair

We are making great progress toward our goal of $300,000. At $284,830 we are almost there. However, we need everyone's participation to get us over the top and start the work.  We want to get started as soon as possible so that those who have pledged can see the fruits of their commitment. The Education Building stairs needs to get started as soon as possible. We want to install the new sound system for the hearing impaired as soon as possible as well. With new landscaping and trees in front of the church we will look like the great church we are.  We need your pledge to reach our goal so we can begin.  If you have not pledged yet, please bring your pledge to church this Sunday. If you are unable to come, please mail it to the church this week. This is an exciting time for St. Mark’s and we are sure you want to be a part of it!

Living The Questions

People know that Christianity has something very, very good to offer the human race.  At the same time, many have a sense that they are alone in being a "thinking" Christian and that "salvaging" Christianity may be a hopeless task.  Living the Questions is a video-based study which moves beyond the traditions and rote theologies in which so many people and local churches seem to be stuck.  It will help seekers and long-time members alike to discover the profound significance of Christianity in the 21st Century and what an authentic faith can look like in today's world. The study continues on Monday’s, from 1 to 2:15 p.m. in the New Room, near the church office.  All are invited.

Condolences

We are very sad to report that Spencer Topham, former St. Mark's Youth Director, passed away on Monday, April 17.  Earlier in March, Spencer was hospitalized due to respiratory distress. He had an extremely rare condition that kept his lungs from recovering. Spencer's family stayed by his side throughout his hospitalization.  They have posted additional information online at: https://www.gofundme.com/spencers-medical-expenses.

A celebration of life will be held at the end of July. When the family has announced the date and time, we will share that information through the Messenger. Spencer served at Mission Hills UMC, and ran a twice-a-week "Sidewalk Play Stop" ministry program for neighborhood children. Please keep Spencer's family and the Mission Hills congregation in your prayers. He will be deeply missed.

2017 Yard Sale

As you are doing your spring cleaning (do people do that in California?) please keep our annual church yard sale in mind for those usable things you no longer want or need. The dates of the sale are August 4 and 5, and we hope you will also set aside time to help during the week prior to the sale and/or at the sale itself. It requires many hands to sort, price and sell these items, but the rewards are great for the workers, our church, the community, and for those non-profit agencies which receive the unsold items. We will be recruiting workers during July and would love to see your name on the sign-up opportunities! There will be things to do for all age groups, and all levels of mobility, so please plan to be part of this special event!
