The bumpy journey of digital leadership

We are at the beginning, not the end, of digital transformation. Still, I meet leaders who live under a stone—in denial...
Hi everyone,

I hope you have had a great week. If you wish to unsubscribe from my newsletter you can do so here

I've been busy acclimatising myself to living in south of Gothenburg, Sweden again. I moved back from London a while ago and it is challenging to change countries after being based abroad for almost ten years.

I am really happy I moved back to my home country, and I plan to stay here. But still, it’s difficult.

Moving to a new country means that you recharge and restart yourself. Right now, I am continually looking for new fuel in my life.

I spent a few years working full-time as a speaker and trainer. It was a fabulous time in many ways. I travelled to new countries, I met amazing people and I learned a lot about myself.

When you do a lot of public speaking you give away a lot of your own energy. You never know what kind of audience you will meet, some will give you energy back and some will just suck up all the energy in the room including yours.

After speaking full-time for a while I realised that there was not enough energy left for me to stay healthy and happy and I started to slow down.

Now that I am back in Sweden, it would not work for me to travel and speak as I did before, and it has to do with my energy.

I’ve just finished a job where I was looking at the level of digitalisation in the manufacturing industry in Sweden. Very interesting, but it was temporary. My next step here in Sweden is to find a job that fits me, where I can use my mix of skills and knowledge.

I have lectured a few times in Sweden and I will continue to speak professionally, but it won’t be my main thing.

I am now looking for my next turn and if you have any tips or contacts to share please get in touch.

The areas I am looking into are:
  • digitalisation
  • operations and management
  • digital marketing
  • chief digital officer
  • brand development
  • entrepreneurship
  • new digital platforms
  • other interesting opportunities.
All help is welcome! If you have any tips get in touch by emailing me on sofie@sofiesandell.com.

I wish you a great weekend.

Quick points

What I am working on
I am working on finding new contexts here in Sweden. I have found a few through my work, but I need to find more frameworks where I belong.

What I am learning about
I am into composting at the moment. I will soon start my own bokashi composting factory and it’s really exciting. Around the house where we live we need a lot of new soil and it will be perfect to make new soil at home.

What I am fighting
I planted some sunflower plants in the outdoor room a while ago. One day I discovered that someone had eaten the small plants. I planted new seeds. The next day they were gone again. I then planted new seeds and put them on a pedestal table out of reach of mice and other animals. But, the next day the seeds were gone. A neighbour suggested that the cat will catch the mice if he is hungry. We didn’t feed the cat during the whole day and then we let him sleep in the outdoor room for one night. He suffered and hated it, and escaped at 4am and came into the house and woke us up. After this, he will never go into the room again. It was a big trauma for him, and I felt pretty bad locking him in a cold room. Yesterday I placed some rat traps out there with Snickers in them. I caught four mice in 24 hours and gave them to the cat to make him happy.

What I am listening to
I have listened to Tara Brach’s podcast a few times lately and if you are interested in meditation I recommend you check it out.

Projects I am following
I am following the One Dear World crowdfunding campaign at the moment. It’s a set of multi-cultural dolls from around the world that aims to help us to show kids that they are fine as they are and create better mutual understanding.

Quotes I like at the moment
“Realise that everything connects to everything else.”
Leonardo da Vinci

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
Eleanor Roosevelt

A lunch with a nice twist

Last month I was having lunch with a group of women I had met through one my friends. After an hour or so there were only four of us left and the discussion started to get really interesting. You know, when there seems to be a certain direction in the discussion and there are a lot of inspiring ideas in the air.

It was clear to me that all of us had a vast mix of experiences and we loved synergies.

One person said that she used to describe herself as ‘multipotential’. She has changed career many times and when telling her story to new people she sometimes confused them with her diverse choices and different career fields.

I was not surprised at all. We live in an era where we need to be able to describe ourselves in a few sentences to help other people to put us in a box. I find the concept that you need to pitch yourself incredibly boring. I would rather have a conversation with someone and after I will remember the details of their stories. I have no problem accepting that people have many hobbies, interests, experiences and jobs, I can separate them out and take that in. People who pitch themselves in 30 seconds are just boring.

Listening to my new acquaintance made me dig into what it means to be multipotential and I started to discover that I am the same as her.

My life, interests and new hobbies have been unsettling for others many times. Some have asked: “Why don’t you focus on just a few things instead of always learning new things and digging into new areas?”

Well, the answer is that my brain pulls me along to all these new things, and I only share a few of them on my public CV.

I have always learnt about new topics and I find a lot of joy in digging into new subjects. I am a quick learner and it has certainly helped my work with digital development where everything changes fast.

I have never felt satisfied with only my work and have always been looking for new communities, groups and networks to apply my energy to. Periodically I’ve been a busy bee exploring all opportunities around me.

If you recognise yourself in my description here I recommend that you search the web for more information about being like this: a multidisciplinary, multitalented, multipotential, curious person.

I think people like us rock!

Thanks :-)

Social media and new technology have created new habits and new challenges. It’s a gift that we should use carefully and with the best intentions. Our understanding of ourselves and the world changes hugely when we connect with new technology.

We live one life, and our online life is weaved into our real life.
