Making the Invisible Visible

Welcome to the 7th issue of H-CARDD Connects! The past issues of this newsletter have given you a glimpse at the work we have been doing to identify gaps in health and healthcare for adults with developmental disabilities (DD) to increase visibility of vulnerable subpopulations, and how we've used that knowledge to identify opportunities to change our practice and policy. This work would not be possible without our partnerships with knowledge users in government. The involvement of policy makers has been pivotal in our research and has helped to shape what H-CARDD is today. It is through these partnerships that we are able to break down silos, take an intersectoral approach, and make Ontarians with DD visible. Stay tuned for our next issue where we will explore partnerships between H-CARDD and health planners.

Opportunities for Change

Dr. Yona Lunsky welcomes attendees to the H-CARDD 2016 Provincial Meeting

In 2016 our team brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from health care, social services, children and youth, and education. This meeting led to 6 key recommendations to change the trajectories of individuals with DD who may slip through the cracks of our system or be more vulnerable to certain health issues. Read the full report, 'Making the Invisible Visible". Since this meeting H-CARDD team members have stayed connected with policy makers as they explore ways to use H-CARDD research in decision making.

H-CARDD Conversations: Policy Makers

We connected with Barbara Simmons, Director of Community Supports Policy at the Ministry of Community and Social Services and Phil Graham, Director of Primary Health Care Branch at the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, to hear more about how H-CARDD research impacts their work. Both Barbara and Phil have been key stakeholders in driving research questions and turning findings from H-CARDD research into opportunities for action.

"The strong credibility of H-CARDD research, in terms of the expertise of researchers and partners, allows me and my team of senior policy advisors to make confident recommendations to government decision-makers." - Barbara Simmons

"The approach of H-CARDD acknowledges that there is no one person, agency or government ministry that can alone improve the health and health care for those with developmental disabilities. One of its strengths is bringing together people with developmental disabilities, clinicians, service providers and people in government with a shared goal to make things better." - Phil Graham
