Friend,

The federal government isn't being helpful on a lot of the issues that we hold most dear these days, we get it. But let's not get discouraged and throw up our hands, let's get busy. Communities across the nation are showing how positive change can  be made at the local level and ILSR is working hard to give those efforts more visibility so they can be replicated far and wide.

We've developed a new way to illuminate issues and solutions to break the chains of monopoly power across our economy, including in our newest podcast, Building Local Power. In this series we're sharing our latest original research and interviewing the most prominent voices in the local policy movement to discuss today's most pressing topics. That's why you should subscribe wherever podcasts are found, including iTunesStitcher, or RSS/XML.

In a recent episode, Mayors Take on Preemption to Defend Local Solutions, ILSR staff are joined by Tallahassee Mayor, Andrew Gillum, to discuss his work in a movement designed to fight state preemption of local authority. "There's a nimbleness to local governments that I think people have an appreciation for," says Mayor Gillum of the harms of state preemption in America's communities. He adds, "I don't think the story is yet told completely on the financial impacts and the negative regressive financial impacts that these kind of super preemptive policies have on local communities."

In another recent episode, Breaking Through Partisanship: Left-Right-Local, experts from across our initiatives come together to talk through how local issues and local first policy cuts across the political divide. We all know that, on the federal level, our politics have become increasingly partisan, but that's not the end of the story.
