Welcome to the weekly Newsletter for parents and carers of students attending John Hanson Community School.

Inspire - Care - Succeed
‘HEAD’ Lines

Dear Parents and Carers

As I complete my first week as Acting Headteacher at John Hanson, I would like to reflect on my vision and ambition for the school, and it is a very simple one.

Every student who attends John Hanson should leave after 5 years with 3 things:

  1. A great education – that gives them the opportunities to do whatever they want post-16
  2. Great memories – that will last a lifetime
  3. Great friends – I met my 2 best friends aged 11 on my first day of secondary school!

I look forward to working with you during the summer term, and hopefully beyond.

Please click on the link below to find some up-to-date information on how the grading system for GCSE examinations is changing.

If you have a child in year 11 this will have an impact on English and Maths this year. This will impact on students in all other year groups, in all subjects, as they move up through the school.

I feel it is important that as our educational system changes you are kept as well informed as possible. Please see below the link to a short video that helps to explain the change form letter to number grades at GCSE.

Kangaroo Maths Challenge

Just before the Easter holiday, 3 of our KS3 students took part in the second round of the UKMT Kangaroo Maths Challenge.

Congratulations to Zoe Grimison (Best in School) James Adcock who achieved a Merit Award, and Tom Hewson achieved a Qualification in the challenge.

A massive well done to all of them.

Delicious Mille Feuilles made by Year 10 Students

This week one of our Year 10 Food Preparation and Nutrition classes made these stunning Mille Feuilles. First they made their own flaky pastry and then, once baked, assembled the layers with piped fresh double cream and raspberry jam before feather icing the top to make them look professional. Every stage showed a high level of skill and, without exception, they were all very successful so congratulations to all those who made them! I'm sure you will be called upon to make these at home again for the next special occasion!
School Uniform Expectations

Thank you for your continued support for the high standards of uniform that the school insists upon. In order that this continues I have made a few changes to the way we tackle the very small number of students who arrive at school in incorrect uniform.

Since the Easter break students arriving at school in incorrect uniform will not be allowed to attend lessons. We will contact you (usually via Parent Mail) to ask you for permission to send your child home to change, or for you to bring in the correct uniform. If neither are possible your child will work in isolation, away from the main body of the school until such time as the issue has been resolved.

We understand that there are occasional issues with uniform and in these cases students should arrive at school with a note from you explaining both the issue and how it is going to be resolved within the next couple of days.

To remind you:
  • Trousers must be appropriate workwear. Students are not allowed to wear jeans or leggings
  • Only pleated skirts are allowed
  • Socks should be plain black
  • Students must wear leather shoes. Boots and trainers are not allowed
  • Only minimal make up is permitted. Excessive make up and nail varnish will have to be removed. Acrylic/gel nails are not permitted in school.
