Highlight | Chalk Talk

Not everyone understands what a fellow is or what our fellows do when they are here with us for a year.  Maia has been our fellowship coordinator for 3 years.  Not long after she started in her role, she knew she wanted to help educate others in our organization about our fellowship program as well as share all of the exciting happenings with our former fellows.  As she immersed herself in the daily work of the fellowship, she quickly learned that our fellows do a lot for our patients, our faculty, and our community.  In March, after months of design, development, and revisions Maia published the first issue of Chalk Talk which celebrates and promotes our fellowship program. We would like to highlight our team member Maia who is not only busy as the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Coordinator, but also assisting Dr. Fetzer in clinic as his Administrative Assistant. Here are a few questions we asked Maia to get to know her!

What's your favorite memory?

I have so many!  But some of the best are from my high school years, a long time ago ;)  In 1995, a group of us, high schoolers, fundraised money and donations and we traveled to northern Argentina to re-build this very poor school.  We stayed there a week and had the best time ever!  We made lots of very good friends and most importantly, did something amazing for others.  That feeling, of helping those way less fortunate, is one of my favorite memories.

What fictional place would you like to visit?

Good question!  I would have to say Moors, the magical forest realm bordering the kingdom from the movie Maleficent.  Looks so much fun and enchanting to me in the movie!  And ties with my wish to be a fairy…maybe someday? ;)

What is a recent book that you have enjoyed, and why?

I really enjoyed “The Vacationers” by Emma Straub.  A family decides to have one more family vacation, even though the kids are almost in their thirties and the parents are struggling with their marriage.  They decide to spend a week in Mallorca, Spain at a friend of the family’s house.  Needless to say, lots of drama, confessions and shocking moments, BUT the description of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean throughout the book and what they end up learning from the trip makes this a very entertaining book.

PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: Symmetrical weight-bearing between limbs during athletic tasks is often a focus of preseason training programs. The specific relationship between weight-bearing symmetries during athletic tasks and injury risk has not been demonstrated. Therefore the purpose of this study was to (1) compare preseason lower extremity weight-bearing symmetry during different athletic tasks between athletes who did or did not sustain a lower extremity injury during the subsequent season and (2) determine a threshold for injury risk.
