Former Secretary of Education Duncan is just days away from his first Knight Commission meeting as co-chair. "Without commenting on specific allegations at UNC, or anywhere else, where athletes are taking sham classes, when they are being passed through to create revenue for the university, when they are not earning college degrees and not being prepared for the real world, it is absolutely abusive and immoral. It makes no sense educationally, and it is morally bankrupt." Coaching diversity & player safety are two topics of key importance to Duncan, "The proportion is so wildly out of whack when more than five out of 10 players are black and one in 10 coaches are black. We need that pipeline and we need to be intentional about creating it. … Folks of color are just systematically denied opportunity. There is no polite way to put that." Also of major note, "The pace of change in college sports has been much too slow. It should not take decades. […] To be clear, this is really going to be about boards of universities and boards of directors who set policy." (link)
Thorough piece by Whole Hog Sports' Jones on the $160M renovation to Arkansas' Razorback Stadium that's moving along on schedule with the expectation of completion in time for 2018's opening kick. Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Trantham is overseeing the project & points to the rebuild of the Broyles Center, home to many administrative offices, as the last piece of the process, "We've got seats sold and we're going to want to host folks for a wonderful experience that first game, so if there is something that gets delayed, it's going to be folks moving into their office space." Thirty-eight new suites are being added - thirty-one of which have already been sold - at a seven-year investment with donation levels of $3,700 to $4,100 per seat. Loge box sales will start this summer. Northern Illinois professor McEvoy not surprised the Hogs aren't including a bunch of general admission seating in its plans, "There is evidence to suggest that attendance might be going down among younger fans and students in particular, but the demand is still very high for a premium customer. While it may not make sense to add tens of thousands of seats to a stadium, it makes sense to add a few-thousand premium seats." Bonding for the work will cost $9M to $10M annually & will add to the $56.5M in overall debt on the Razorbacks books, second lowest in the SEC in FY16. Lots more from Trantham & McEvoy, as well as constructions progress pics. (link)
New Mexico AD Krebs says he didn't use a search firm for his recent hiring of new MBB HC Weir because his time on the MBB Selection Committee provided plenty of "access to all the information and all the resources needed to conduct the thorough search we did." Records show Krebs took Deputy AD Ruggiero, Board of Regents Prez Doughty & EVP for Administration Harris with him to Vegas from April 6 to 8 in order to interview Weir, ETSU HC Forbes, UT Arlington HC Cross, San Antonio Spurs AC Borrego & Florida Gulf Coast boss Dooley, at an overall cost of $8,600. (link)
Syracuse AD Wildhack talked about more than just the layoffs by his former employer, ESPN, during a radio interview on Thursday. Of note: Indicates due diligence continues on possible renovation scenarios to the Carrier Dome with one of the biggest challenges being when the facility could be revamped with all the events it hosts, as well as what specific improvements would best upgrade the fan experience. Says he & FB HC Babers are on the same page when it comes to scheduling, which "needs to be reflective and take into account the annual challenges you have within the conference." Calls the ACC Atlantic "arguably the best in college football." (link)
"You don’t have to have the biggest house in the neighborhood, but you want to be in the neighborhood. We’re in the neighborhood. This is a game changer for us." That's Minnesota AD Coyle on the new Athletes Village, currently 65% to 70% complete & nine months from occupancy. Media got a chance to tour the new digs this week & wrote of high ceilings & some excellent city views. Coyle says the project got new FB HC Fleck's "attention" when he first saw it. (link)
The move of TCU's home FB game against Ohio State in 2018 to AT&T Stadium in Arlington has riled the feathers of some Horned Frog fans & AD Del Conte offers context. "I understand their angst. But when we collectively make a decision — me, Coach Patterson, our university leadership — we’re talking about what is best for TCU, our program, moving forward. [...] Playing a game like this as a one-off at a neutral site is phenomenal for TCU in terms of national exposure. TCU is at the point where we’re viewed in the same light as an Alabama, a USC that’s played at AT&T Stadium. These are big-time games. [...] I hide nothing. There was a variety of conversations happening with the wants and wishes of everyone involved. At the end, we made the decision. I bear the responsibility of that decision. I can tell you, I understand the disappointment." (link)
More notes from the board meeting at Louisville over the past couple days. Baseball's Jim Patterson Stadium will get a $9.5M upgrade that will add another 2.6K seats & other amenities once the money can be raised. Balcony seating being installed in the new look Cardinal Arena & new turf will go into both the Trager Center & Field Hockey's home digs at a combined cost of $650K. (link); Down the road in Lexington, Kentucky is set to add 6K new chair back seats in Commonwealth Stadium. The Wildcats have renewed 30.6K+ FB season ticket holders for the upcoming season. (link)
As you've likely seen, Nike, Adidas & Under Armour will all pass on the opportunity to "partner" with Big Baller Brand as the elder Ball continues to bloviate on his positioning efforts. Next up are pitches to Chinese brands, such as Li-Ning, Peak & Anta. Ball compares BBB to Uber's disruption of the taxi industry & other seemingly stretch scenarios (Facebook-WhatsApp). (link); This Twitter thread from Goodwin Sports Management athlete marketer Jones is interesting. Jones works with Portland Trailblazers & former Weber State star Lillard's off the court portfolio, along with others, "No established brand with billions worth of brand equity is going to 'co-brand' with a brand no one knows or cares about. It's amateur season at this point. I respect the intent behind BBB, but he needed help building before so brands would consider partnership. Now if he had professional help building out the brand name, logo and designs prior, this would have had a better chance of working." More. (link); Looks like Chino Hills High School, home of the Balls, will be looking for a new MBB HC. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Prepare for your mind to be blow (again) by entrepreneur & technologist Musk. Yesterday brought the first renderings of an underground network of tunnels that could alleviate traffic in big cities & transport cars on "skates" at high speeds. "There’s no real limit to how many levels of tunnels you can have. The deepest mines are much deeper than the tallest buildings are tall." The Boring Company is Musk's effort to solve the problem of traffic & includes creating the ability to dig & reinforce tunnels at a much quicker rate than current machinery is able to accomplish. Check out the video at the bottom. (link)

Tennessee Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Robinson will slide over to the campus role of Vice Chancellor for Communications/Chief Marketing & Communications Officer. The move gives new Vols AD Currie another senior post to fill as he builds-out his team. This past week Currie added College Football Playoff CFO Sigmon as Executive Assoc. AD & COO, but has additional openings left from the previous departures of former senior leaders Gilbert (to Southern Miss as AD), Fuller (to Syracuse as Deputy AD for External Operations) & Vollmar (who oversaw UT FB). (link)
Middle Tennessee AD Massaro likes the way his department has maintained a consistent social media presence & brand in the face of a constantly changing digital landscape. Massaro's comments come on the heels of an animal cruelty incident captured on social that led to the departure of two FB student-athletes. Massaro believes his Compliance team is doing a solid job monitoring student-athlete accounts at the present, points to department resources that may one day lead to third party assistance. "It's a changing world that you have to be on top of." (link)
HC Notes: Oral Roberts AD Carter has hired Baylor AC Mills as the new MBB HC in Tulsa. (link); Delaware WBB HC Martin decides to retire after 21 years of leading the Blue Hens. AD Rawak calls it a personal decision for Martin. Some reports indicate student-athlete feedback may have been involved. (link); Florida A&M AD Overton is still on the hunt for a new MBB HC as the application window officially closed this past Wednesday. Included in those who submitted materials: Savannah State HC Broadnax, former USF HC & current Oregon staffer McCullum, as well as former Florida State HC Kennedy. (link); Butler MBB HC Holtmann gets another extension, could live in Hinkle through 2024-25 now. (link); New Mexico State AD Moccia says of the $140K salary for a new WBB HC "that's our financial reality." (link); Canisius AD Maher promotes AC Large to the top spot overseeing Men's Hockey. (link); In depth read on the exit of former Winthrop WBB HC Cook, in which he discusses nearly every thing except his separation agreement. (link); New Idaho State FB HC Phenicie will make a base of $85K. (link); Northern Kentucky Baseball HC Asalon got suspended for four games after bumping an umpire earlier in the week during his ejection at Louisville. Video included of the love tap. (link); DePaul Women's Golf HC Kaufmann plans to retire at the conclusion of the season after 19 years of leadership. (link)
A DI Committee on Infractions panel finds former Florida International WBB HC Chin "did not promote an atmosphere of compliance in his program when he provided $600 in cash to a student-athlete." The $600 was for an outstanding balance that allowed the student-athlete to enroll in a winter term, which was needed for eligibility purposes. Suggested measures include a two-year show-cause for Chin, two years of probation for the program, vacation of all wins the student-athletes was a part of & a $5K fine. (link)
Missed this one last week as Gridiron Now's Scott penned on the facility & competitive resurgence of Colorado FB. Even though the piece is in the ultra-annoying multi-page style with a "next page" click needed after every few sentences or paragraphs, it includes a solid collection of facility pictures & descriptions. Scott's take on the Buffs locker room, "With the lights off, the Colorado locker room feels more like a trendy Las Vegas ultra-lounge. It’s just as cool with the lights on. Colorado really nailed the aesthetic in the locker room and the throughout the entire facility." (link)
Time, Inc. won't be selling itself after all, instead the publishing company will continue to execute its strategic plan, which will reportedly include some layoffs. Digital will be a major focus moving forward, as will third party partnerships. CEO Battista: "We think we want to focus and double-down on the core ones [brands]." No specific mention of where Sports Illustrated falls, which you would normally presume to be a "core" brand, but given machinations of the sports media industry over the past week, who knows. (linklink)

Current Liberty AD & former Baylor boss McCaw pushes back on the lawsuit that claims he didn't respond to sexual assault allegations in Waco in the appropriate manner. McCaw's attorney: "We want to be sensitive to anyone who has suffered the trauma of a sexual assault, and we can’t emphasize that enough. But in the course of the legal proceedings, we have to focus on presenting the full truth of the situation. I’m confident that when the full truth is revealed, it will show that my client, Ian McCaw, was not negligent. I believe that many people will be surprised when they learn the full truth about the situation." Plaintiff attorney Zalkin ready to let the proceedings play out. (link)
Iowa FB HC Ferentz & Wrestling HC Brands were on the stand yesterday in the trial involving former Hawkeyes Senior Assoc. AD Meyer. Ferentz on Meyer, "There was a lot of turbulence at times." Brands: "It was a mess. [...] It was a mess because Jane Meyer inserted herself as an expert, asserted herself as an expert, and we lived and trained in that facility. We knew the direction we wanted to go." Ferentz called Meyer's plans to revamp his FB facilities "generic" & nothing like those at Oklahoma, which he liked best from visits with Meyer & other key leaders, though he did describe the end product in complementary terms. More. (link)
Beer at Ballgames: Back to Albuquerque where New Mexico generated $143K+ in profit from its first year of sales at University Stadium & The Pit. The figure is general admission-based only & does not include alcohol transactions in premium areas. No major incidents were reported around the addition. Per UNM's contract with Levy, the two split revenues 50/50. (link)
Here's a five-minute clip of rape survivor Tracy's delivery to Stanford FB posted by the program's Twitter feed earlier in the week. Dubbed #SetTheExpectation, student-athletes commented after the session on lessons learned. "It's just so powerful. Just to do the little things, the very bare minimum, the impact it could have. You're literally saving lives. [...] It's fantastic that she came here to speak so that we can hear that because I know going forward that the change will happen." (link)
Michigan State has extended the contract of FB Recruiting Director Blackwell through May, but he remains suspended with pay for "several allegations regarding your conduct." It's the second one-month add-on Blackwell has received since his February 9th exit from the program. There's still no confirmation from the university on the exact reason for Blackwell's absence. (link)
Also Noticed: Sacred Heart is the latest to ink a new apparel deal. Adidas will outfit the Pioneers for 10 years. No financial terms noted. (link); Through three rounds of the NFL Draft, the SEC tops the charts with 30 student-athletes selected. Big Ten second at 19, Pac-12 third at 16. Rest of the conference list included in the link. (link); "Win the Day" replaced by "Do Something" at Oregon, at least in one spot. (link)
