Late Winter Ripples E-news

Proposed Trump Budget Threatens Lake Champlain

The White House is proposing to slash the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) budget by 25%. The $2 billion cut from EPA's budget of $8.14 billion represents a mere .05% "savings" in the total federal budget. While the draconian cuts to EPA have little impact on the overall budget they will have a significant effect on the ability of the Agency to carry out its mission to protect human health and the environment. Tile Drain Report Falls Short

For several years LCC has been raising awareness about tile drains and urging state agencies to focus more attention and regulatory scrutiny on them. Tile drainage is a tool farmers use to drain water from their fields faster. They install perforated plastic pipes in trenches several feet below the surface. The pipes accumulate water and whisk it to a nearby stream or wetland. Tiling allows farm fields to dry earlier in the spring and prevents excess water build up during wet periods. Read more...

Attendees rocked to live music from The Tenderbellies, noshed yummy food, sampled great beer and toasted the lake and the advocacy work necessary for clean water. Read more...

Lake Look

The Sixth Great Lake

For a brief period in 1998, the United States government officially recognized Lake Champlain as one of the Great Lakes. The designation allowed Vermont institutions access to funds reserved for states which bordered an ocean or a Great Lake, but Midwestern officials were outraged that Champlain might share a designation with their lakes. Read more...

Nature Note

Winter Ducks

Winter is a great time for observing waterfowl on Lake Champlain. During the chilly months many birds escape from even colder northern climes to the relative warmth and tranquility of Lake Champlain. Ducks can be found wherever the edge of the ice is.

Warmer Lake Superior Winters Mean Islanders Can't Drive

Before 1999 Lake Superior ferries never operated all winter between the communities of Bayfield Wisconsin and Madeline Island, the small resort town that's home to about 250 year-round residents.
