‘Stop fixing women’ book launch
Guest Speaker: Catherine Fox, author & journalist
5.30pm Thursday 22nd June 2017
TressCox Lawyers, Level 16 MLC Centre, 19 Martin Place, Sydney

Millions of words have been spent in our quest to explain men’s seemingly never-ending dominance in boardrooms, in parliaments, in the bureaucracy and in almost every workplace. So why is gender inequality still such a pressing issue?

Wage inequality between men and women seems one of the intractables of our age. Women are told they need to back themselves more, stop marginalising themselves, negotiate better, speak up, support each other, strike a balance between work and home. This searing book argues that insisting that women fix themselves won’t fix the system, the system built by men.

Catherine Fox does more than identify and analyse the nature of the problem.  Her book is an important tool for male leaders who say they want to make a difference. She throws down the gauntlet, showing how business, defence, public service and community leaders might do it, rather than just talk about it. She shows that not only will this be better for women but for productivity as well, not to mention men and women’s health and happiness at home and at work.

Catherine Fox is an award-winning journalist and author. She was the former Corporate Woman columnist at the Australian Financial Review.

RESEARCH INTO COURT-CONNECTED MEDIATION
Researchers from the University of New South Wales are seeking respondents to participate in a research project presently being undertaken into lawyer engagement with court-connected mediation.  The views of lawyers, particularly of women lawyers who are underrepresented in the study to date, are being sought in relation to their experiences with all forms of mediation which is conducted “in the shadow of the law,” that is to say, either by court referral or pursuant to the requirements of a law about dispute resolution and whether or not the mediation is held before commencement of proceedings or as part of a litigation process.

Potential respondents should be solicitors in New South Wales or the ACT who are practicing in the area of litigation whether or not they also practice in some other area of the law.  The research involves a one hour audio recorded interview in the respondent’s office at a mutually agreed appointed time.

We hope that this research will provide women lawyers with an opportunity to be consulted and voice their opinions about an important area of the law which is destined to become a significant component of legal practice into the future.

Further information about this project and a form of consent to participate may be obtained by email to j.woodward@unsw.edu.auor by telephone to John Woodward on 0403 054 411.
This research, which is self-funded, is part of a PhD project at the University of New South Wales and has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee under HC Number 16472.
