WHAT IS WORLD DISCO SOUP DAY?

From Uganda to Japan, Brazil to Netherlands, the global Slow Food network will join forces on the 29th April 2017 to the first World Disco Soup Day. The event is an initiative of Slow Food Youth Network that aims to fight food waste. While part of the population suffers from hunger, every year one-third of the food intended for human consumption is thrown away: meaning 1.3 billion of tons of food becomes garbage. At the same time, according to Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), we only produce enough food to supply the world's growing population until 2050. So, clearly, we have a big contradiction in front of us.

The Disco Soup is an action to fight against food waste in which volunteers are invited to collect, wash, clean, cut and cook the leftover foods (usually referring to the leftover foods from the farmer’s market) or any food that would go to waste - for example for not conforming to the commercial aesthetic standards. Moreover, it is a gastronomic, artistic and musical event that brings together young people, students, children, elderly, cooks and all the supporters of this battle against food waste. It is also a transformation tool that brings together diverse knowledge for education and awareness.

After performing many editions, last year the Slow Food Youth Network in Brazil organized a national Disco Soup Day. The initiative mobilized fourteen different Brazilian cities, with over 7,000 participants and intercepted over 500 kg of food which would have otherwise gone to waste. This year we're joining with other community groups locally and going global in order to spread this important message about food waste and show solidarity with our grassroots network throughout the world.

What is the Slow Food Youth Network?

The Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN) is an international network of young people who bring about changes in the field of food production and consumption. It was founded by a number of enthusiastic and motivated young people with a passion for good, clean and fair food, and with an interest in sustainability issues.

We are the world's future leaders, entrepreneurs, farmers and consumers. The Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN) was founded to make youth familiar with Slow Food's philosophy that says that all food should be Good, Clean and Fair. This means that food should be prepared with care and respect, grown as sustainable as possible and that the farmers and producers should get a fair wage.

SFYN raises awareness among young citizens and consumers to encourage and mobilize them in making responsible choices. It wants them to take part in the public debate about current issues, such as how to feed the world, what to do about food waste, and how to produce food as sustainable as possible.
