EAP Spring Dispatch

Dear Alumni, Students, and Friends,
With another academic year almost in the books, I'm happy to report we had a jam-packed spring semester! Back in March, 13 students and 4 faculty participated in the first ever EAP Professional Development Trip to Chicago. The trip was a great success and you can read more about it in the right hand column. This spring, we also launched an exciting partnership with SCB Group, where the energy brokerage firm provided over $5000 in cash awards to EAP students for top papers in our new Energy Markets class.
We have also had much to celebrate this year. We were thrilled that EAP co-founder Wes Foell was recognized as the Wisconsin Energy Educator of the Year, and I was honored to be named a 2017 Andrew Carnegie Fellow, announced just this week. Additionally, our alumni were extremely activate this spring hosting multiple events in Madison and Chicago.

Energy Educator of the Year Award
We would like to take a moment to acknowledge founding EAP faculty member, Wes Foell, was given the Energy Educator of the Year award by the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education.. Even in retirement, Wes continues to be a major supporting force for energy research and education in Wisconsin. His persistent involvement in the program over four decades is truly responsible for EAP's continued success.
Bunn Fellowship Announcement
We are proud to announce the coming year's Bunn Fellow, David Abel. After receiving his Environment and Resources Masters degree in the fall, David decided to continue on in a Phd program with advisor Tracey Holloway. He hopes to further his research on the air quality implications of electric generation throughout the US. The Bunn Distinguished Graduate Fellowship is named in honor of the first chair of EAP and UW Law Professor, George Bunn, whose generous gift established the fellowship.
Barriers to Renewable Energy Alumni Event
Following our Chicago Trip in March, our alumni organized an event for students and alumni to present on one barrier to renewable energy adoption. All participants were asked to submit a brief abstract and a single slide for their five minute presentation. Topics ranged from biogas to solar gardens to air quality. We're fortunate to have such involved alumni!

Students Rave About EAP Chicago Trip

Over a whirlwind of two days, students and faculty traveled throughout the greater Chicago Area meeting with a selection of energy professionals to hear of the latest developments in the energy sector. In a post trip survey, all students rated the trip as excellent and said they would recommend another trip in 2018! "It was incredibly insightful as a student to see various opportunities in the private sector," one student said. The first stop of trip was at Baxter International where EAP Alumnus Ron Meissen gave an overview of the company's renewable energy portfolio and sustainability efforts. After lunch, the group was off to meet with professors and academic staff at the University of Illinois Chicago to learn more about their Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy as well as their research with Argonne National Laboratory.

The next day, the group visited the Center for Neighborhood Technology, learning about the non-profits' energy planning efforts to work with cities across the country. Afterwards, students met with EAP Alumnus Susan Mudd at the Environmental Law and Policy Center to hear about their coordination on various environmental issues across the Midwest.

The trip concluded with a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry to view their energy education exhibits. "I believe experiences such as this trip are extremely valuable and would highly recommend it to students in the following years." another student said. Lastly, we would like to thank the continued generous support of our alumni, this trip would not have been possible without their financial contributions. EAP Happy Hour
At the conclusion of the Nelson Institute's Annual Earth Day Conference, EAP alumni hosted a gathering for students and alumni at Brocach's on the Square. A great time was had by all!
