It’s a public holiday here in Australia today, so I’ll keep my intro short. I’ve been busy going through the many recommendations for potential contributors you sent last week, thanks again! 👍

Are you organising a creative/tech event? I frequently give out small amounts of free give-away copies of Offscreen. If your event has 50+ attendees, fill out this form and I’ll be in touch to organise shipping.

Apps

TunnelBear

A dead-simple VPN solution

I've been a NordVPN user for a year now but recently experienced various connection issues. So I've given TunnelBear a try last week. Today I signed up as a paying customer. Their Mac app is tiny and knows when to get out of the way. I don't use VPN a lot but when I do, TunnelBear is all I need.

The Great Suspender

Suspend browser tabs to reduce memory

With this aptly named Chrome plugin you can suspend unused browser tabs (manually or automatically after a certain time period) to help your computer save precious memory space.

Sideways Dictionary →

Explaining tech terms in analogies

Rather than giving you a boring, technical definition of tech terms, Sideways Dictionary offers a list of analogies. For example API: "It's like a harbour. It's designed to move shipping containers of certain shapes and sizes in and out. It might be open to the public, or it might be for VIP use only."

Gear

Alloy →

Stainless steel iPhone Bumper

The Alloy by Kerf Case is a "first-ever 3D-printed stainless steel iPhone 7 bumper" lined with soft, natural cork to provide ample protection. I'm sure it's durable, but not sure how heavy.

Goldtouch

Compact ergonomic keyboard

A friend at the office got one of those the other week: a compact, foldable, wireless Bluetooth keyboard that can be set up in an angle for a more ergonomic typing position.

Chip Conley ran a boutique hotel company for a quarter of a century and then decided to go work for Airbnb. His honest account of an 'old-school hotel guy' working amongst much younger 'digital natives' is a great reminder of the many things we can all learn from older generations – even if they are much less-tech savvy.

What makes the perfect office?

A case against hiring interior designers for your office space: “When workers were empowered to design their own space, they had fun and worked hard and accurately, producing 30 per cent more work than in the minimalist office and 15 per cent more than in the decorated office.”
