Welcome to the GCVS April 2017 Newsletter

On Tuesday this week we held a Hustings event for the upcoming Local Authority Election in Glasgow, featuring candidates from the major parties.

If you're unsure of how the Local Elections work next week, here's a handy video on how Single Transferable Vote (STV) works.

And of course, election activity won't stop after the 4th of May, with the General Election now set for the 8th of June. We're here to help!

Tackling Fraud Together

We are delighted to have been awarded funding from Outreach Solutions to deliver a city-wide project which will raise awareness of fraud among over 55s and the people who support them.

Community Connectors Social Media Launch

Community Connectors - our project which improves connections of those in Glasgow aged 60+ and their carers - will be launching Facebook and Twitter pages next week, be sure to give them a follow!

You can also find out more about what they'll be using the page for and the project in general through an upcoming GCVS Blog post by Colin Vincent, Community Connectors Co-ordinator.

 
Falls Awareness & Prevention Information Session

On the 2nd of May from 9.30am - 1pm, we're hosting a FREE session aimed at anyone working with older people and others who may be vulnerable to falls.

We have an excellent line-up of speakers from organisations including Glasgow Caledonian Univeristy, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and Glasgow Life.

Scottish Mental Health First Aid Training: Young People

Led by Alison Ebbitt of the Family Mediation Practice, this course is for anyone who is interested in supporting young people (aged 11-17) with mental health issues. It comprises one full day’s training, plus 7 hours of e-learning

Ticket sales will close on Tuesday the 9th of May, so make sure you register now to avoid disappointment!

Thunderclap for European Day of Intergenerational Solidarity
 
European Day of Solidarity between Generations takes place on the 29th of April and aims to promote projects doing intergenerational work in areas such as health, volunteering, education and policy.

Generations Working Together would like you to get involved by supporting their Thunderclap, which will be sent on Twitter at noon on European Day of Intergenerational Solidarity itself.

The Larkfield Centre in Govanhill are looking to recruit members for their Writers' Group.

Meetings take place in the centre every Monday, from 1-3pm.

The Notre Dame Centre are looking to appoint new Board Members and they are looking for applications from people who have an understanding of the issues affecting vulnerable children and families.
They are also particularly interested in candidates who have experience in: 
Legal Expertise,  HR/Business, Therapeutic/Psychological Support and/or Children/Youth Work.

Fundraising Regulator - Code Consultation

The Fundraising Regulator has initiated consultation on a number of elements of the Code of Fundraising Practice and they are interested in hearing the views of those within the Third Sector.
Deadline for responses is today, the 28th of April - the survey can be done online here, where you can also find more information.

 
Lingo Flamingo Vacancy

Lingo Flamingo are a non-profit organisation providing outreach language workshops to older adults in care homes and day centres - these have been shown to delay to effects of dementia.

They are currently recruiting for a Sales & Marketing Co-ordinator on a part-time basis, working 28 hours a week - the deadline for applications is Monday the 8th of May, find out more and apply here.
