Healthcare news from Siobhain Duggan at GS1 Ireland
Welcome to the GS1 Ireland Healthcare news update. It has been a busy few months with plenty of activity in all areas.

In March the Healthcare User Group hosted the HUG Information day which was very timely for both the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Regulation.

In April, the Irish Medicines Verification Organisation (IMVO) announced its incorporation and the appointment of the solution provider to host the repository to support compliance to the upcoming Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD). At the same time the Medical Device regulation was adopted by the European Commission. The deadlines for compliance are 9th Feb 2019 and 2020 respectively.

I hope you enjoy the updates and feel free to let me know if there are any topics you wish to hear more about.

Many thanks and happy reading,

Siobhain

Healthcare User Group Information Day

In March the Healthcare User Group (HUG) hosted an information day.  The morning covered the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) with a lively discussion on some of the challenges and opportunities in implementing the legislation. The afternoon session covered Unique Device Identification (UDI) which is part of the new Medical Device Regulation. Both regulations will require considerable change for both suppliers and hospitals/pharmacies/healthcare providers.

GS1 welcomes the adoption of the EU UDI system and the recognition of GS1's role and experience in the new Regulations

The final EU Unique Device Identification (UDI) regulations on medical devices and in-vitro diagnostics were released in April. According to the regulations, a UDI number must be applied to the medical device label, its packaging and, in some cases, the device itself. GS1 global standards will be used by manufacturers to implement the new EU system of Unique Device Identification (UDI), which aims to support patient safety and supply chain security.

FMD – Are you ready for 9th Feb 2019?

In preparation for the 9th Feb 2019, the Irish Medicines Verification Organisation (IMVO) has been formally established as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. This is an important step in the implementation of new EU requirements for safety features on medicines in Ireland which will provide Irish patients with reassurance against falsified medicines.  Click here to read more

Scan for Surgery

Earlier this year St James’s Hospital went live with their Scan for Surgery project. The hospital is now scanning all items related to a patient's procedure in two of their theatres (cardio-thoracic). The roll-out was very successful and they are now in the process of rolling out Scan for Surgery to additional theatres.
