Sutherland Workbee: Help us move a mountain of woodchips!
The schoolyard market garden at Sutherland needs a refresh! Last month we moved a small batch of wood chips to keep our gardeners out of the muck and mud and it inspired me to order a whole load of wood chips to refresh the whole site. Moving wood chips is surprisingly fulfilling and a great activity to do with kids. Join us! Click here for the google map of Sutherland.

Welcome Cheyanne, Farm Hand!

Cheyanne really became interested in farming after taking part in a permaculture design course on Salt Spring Island in the fall of 2015, although an interest in nature and growing things had always existed. The experience was so inspiring that she knew she wanted to learn more about food production, particularly in small-scale urban settings. She figures since the majority of the world's population resides in cities this is a really important area to learn how to utilize as growing demands increase with the number of people.

After a search for volunteer opportunities in her neighbourhood, Cheyanne came across the EGP and was immediately intrigued, later joining the Loutet internship team for the 2016 season. She loves that there is such a focus on helping and educating others through all the various programs at the EGP. She enjoyed her internship so much she's back for more this year as Loutet's farm hand! Expect to see her around the farm and at Saturday markets.

P.S.- her favorite veggies include salad greens and tomatoes!

Meet the Volunteer Farm Interns

Bruno started seriously gardening after moving to the North Shore 4 years ago.  Wanting to scale up and possibly start his own farm he looked for opportunities to learn directly from a farmer.  This led him to the EGP and the Loutet farm, joining the Saturday workbees and eventually becoming an intern. As a geologist, Bruno has a special interest in minerals and the influence that a well balanced and biologically active soil can have towards growing nutrient dense vegetables. Beside volunteering at the farm Bruno works at UBC, enjoy taking care of his family’s backyard veggie plot and spend as much time as possible with his 2-year-old daughter.

After completing her Yoga Teacher’s Training in Bali, Jenna found a deep connection with nature. Wanting to get even closer to nature and get involved in her community Jenna did some research and found the Edible Garden Project. Wishing to grow her knowledge on plant based foods and to one day have her own farm, she was thrilled about the internship program and is delighted to be a part of the team.

Thank you to Neptune Terminals:

Neptune Terminals continued to support our Edible Garden Education Program in the schools this year! Through this program we support approximately 700 children across North Vancouver by teaching them the cycles of food production from seed to soil.  Time in the garden is hands on, full of questions and discussion, and the students have fun while learning.

We're excited to be one of the community enhancing projects that they support.

This teacher says it best…

“The school garden program provides real life gardening experience with real food that they eat and community connections with farmers, and the garden as a community space... This year two grade one classes created and planted beds outside their classrooms and are having a weekly outdoor learning afternoon.  It wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the Edible garden Project’s inspiration.'
We are proud to be a Good Food Organization working towards a healthy and fair food system in alliance with Community Food Centres Canada. We are joining a  growing network of like-minded organizations across  Canada who share a commitment to offering healthy and dignified food programs in their communities.
