                                                                                                         April 26, 2017
Dear Parents, Guardians, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of Assumption-St. Bridget School,
I hope that all of you have returned from a restful Easter holiday and Spring Break week! The building is back in full swing with a full agenda for the remainder of the third and final trimester of the year.  End of the year and springtime, can bring a lot of business to everyone’s schedule.  We will do our very best to keep the students’ day time routines as consistent as possible and communicate schedule changes and upcoming events as timely as possible.
Next week all students in grades 2-8 will begin their final MAP assessment of the year.  Please discuss the importance of these tests with your child.  As always, make sure your child(ren) is well rested, well fed, and on time to school. Please see your child(ren)’s classroom newsletter for details on testing times and dates.
As we head into the final stretch of the school year, it is important to review expectations.  Teachers have reminded students of uniform code and we ask that you review these also with your child(ren).  Click here https://www.asbschool.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/ASB-uniform-code-2016-2017.pdf to view the uniform code.
Another topic to discuss with your older children is the currently popular Netflix series called 13 Reasons Why.  This series that portrays how a high schooler named Hannah committed suicide.  She leaves behind recorded tapes outlining why she killed herself and names 13 people that contributed to her act of suicide.
The producers of this show intended to create a series to help prevent suicide.  This may be an outcome of this show as more people are discussing the tragedy within the show. However, there are some scenes that graphically show violent acts and inadvertently sensationalize suicide.  Students who are already vulnerable to depression and suicidal thoughts may be more at risk after watching this show.  Many kids are binge watching this show without parent supervision.   Below are links to more information and resources for talking points if your teen is watching this show:
National Association of School Psychologists Considerations
Talking Points for Parents and Teachers
Please watch for more follow up information that teachers will be including in their classroom newsletters coming from our school psychologist, Jenny Riggle.
We look forward to our all school prayer service this upcoming Monday, May 1st.   The prayer service will honor our Mother Mary and include a May Crowning, along with a blessing of all of our Mary sacramental at school and class sets of rosaries, which were generously donated to the students of the school.  Throughout the course of this month, your child(ren) will be learning more about how to pray the rosary, and building yet another form of prayer into their prayer toolkit.  We encourage our families to do the same throughout the month of May.

In Christ's Peace,
Christina Vierra McGill

Registration & Book Fees ($375/per student) are billed each May for the coming year.  In other words, your last 2016-17 tuition payment was made this month (April), with no 2016-17 tuition payments due in May and June. Tuition payments for 2017-18 begin in July 2017, and go through April 2018. This is a reminder that your 2017-18 Registration ($250/student) and Book Fees ($125/student) -- $375/total per student -- will be billed via your FACTS account on May 20, 2017.

Scrip News

STANDING ORDERS:

Safeway cards may not be working – if you are holding a Safeway card (white with a shopping cart on the front), please double check your balance before heading to the store. The phone number is 888-413-5003– type in the 19 digit number on the back of the card – it will let you know your balance. Somehow the cards are showing used in California and we are replacing the cards as they come in. The newly issued Safeway cards (blue) are fine and shouldn’t have a problem. Please email scrip@asbschool.org with questions.

This year we will be giving you the chance to receive your July standing order in June. Watch for more details!  Standing orders for the 2017-2018 school year will resume in August.

Additional information:
  • Safeway cards will have a new look – they still work at Safeway, but carry the Albertsons logo.
  • Menchies is no longer available and we will be updating our order form.
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods is available in $25 or $100 amounts – our form will be updated soon (please write on the bottom of the form if you would like to order now).”
For scrip inquiries, please email: scrip@asbschool.org

Calling all incoming families - that's anyone (new to ASB or current family) with an incoming PreK or Kindergarten student, or a student transferring to grades 1-8...

Please join us...

It's nearing the end of the school year, but we are still accepting applications for 2017-18 throughout all grades! It is not too late...

Please encourage any family interested in learning more about ASB to email me! Thank you.

The Camp ASB Summer Calendar is now available on the ASB School website and is included in this newsletter. Registrations and prepayments for Camp ASB, including registration for the Camp ASB Field Trips, are now being accepted. Some field trips have a limited number of spaces and it is important for those families that want their children to attend, or need their children to attend Camp ASB on those days, to secure their spots. This can be done by contacting me or indicating your needs on the Camp ASB Registration Forms.

As I mentioned two weeks ago, I am very excited that Tara Bellusci will be returning this year to serve as the Kinder Camp Director. Assisting Tara this summer will be Annie Hawksford, KB teacher at ASB School.  I am very excited about the potential opportunities and learning that will take place in KinderCamp under Tara and Annie's direction. Session one will take place the first week after school gets out, June 19-23, and will be held Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Session two will be held the last week of Camp ASB, July 24-28, and will also run Monday-Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Session One: Once Upon a Time… We will read, tell, create, illustrate, and act out stories. Each day a new story sets the stage for fun activities and investigations that spark campers’ curiosity and creativity. Experimenting with light and shadow, exploring nature, and dramatic play are integrated with children’s literature, as well as with math, art, and drama. (Session 1 will be held June 19-23, 2017)

Session Two: Construction Junction
Experiment with using various types of natural and man-made materials to create your own structures and inventions. How tall of a tower can you erect out of straws, or blocks, or cardboard boxes? How would you design and build your very own dream house? Language and art will be used in creating plans for construction. Physics and geometry will be explored as we use mathematical shapes and concepts to identify the science behind building. (Session 2 will be held July 24-28, 2017)

I would encourage all incoming Kindergarten families to consider registering for one or both of these sessions. Kinder Camp is a great opportunity for your incoming Kindergartner to get familiar with his or her classmates, the structure and style of ASB School and the actual facilities (playgrounds, bathrooms, classrooms).  The registration forms for Kinder Camp are located on the ASB School Webpage under the Extended Care link and they are also included in this newsletter.

If you have any questions about Extended Care or Camp ASB, do not hesitate to contact me, I am happy to assist in whatever way that I can.

Thank you,
Dylan Pouley
