April 2017 Newsletter

Hello <<First Name>>

A quick hello dear readers, as it's the end of the month (already?!?) and I have an event this week to tell you about. April has flown by, but that may be because I started the month with a trip to Toronto to visit family, teach a workshop, and fill up on art. I was glad to see I didn't miss out on cherry blossom season, and our weather is slooowly improving to proper spring sunshine.

Timeraiser150 Vancouver

One of my paper cut pieces will be part of Timeraiser150 Vancouver happening this Thursday April 27th. I love this event because the work is first purchased from the participating artists and is then auctioned off to potential volunteers in exchange for their time. This year’s series of events are being held across the country in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

About the event:
Timeraiser is a party for social good, supporting artists and nonprofits. Here’s your chance to kickstart your art collection by giving back to your community. Bid volunteer time, not dollars, for original art by emerging Canadian artists. Bidding starts at 20 hours and maxes out at 150 hours. If a piece you love reaches 150 hours, anyone can match that bid and we’ll draw a winner at random from the max bids once the auction ends.

If you win, you have one year to finish volunteer hours and claim your piece of art. The best part? Volunteer with any nonprofit(s) you choose!

Carving Spirals

I've mentioned previously that I've been exploring new forms and shapes of cuts in my work, and this lovely piece is one of the results of those explorations. The finished piece is 14" x 11" inches and is cut from a piece of Strathmore mixed media paper.

The photo was taken after the piece was framed within a white shadowbox, and is pinned to archival foam core - also an experiment in how to better finish the work for display.

Spiral paper cut

It's been interesting to work with these new shapes when cutting because they've forced me to work even more slowly, to carefully contemplate where and how to cut next. The cutting itself also feels different, more like carving away the paper because the cuts are longer. It's a subtle shift with dramatic effect, and is slowly developing into a new series of pieces.
