AfroRazones is a compilation album and multimedia project platforming and archiving new manifestations of Afro-Cuban identity through hip-hop, R&B and poetry. Created by a collaborative team of Cuban & US-based artists and organizers in the summer of 2016 out of DJ Jigüe's Guampara Music in Havana, Cuba - AfroRazones creates a space for modern Afro-Cuban expression from the island. AfroRazones empowers current Cuban manifestations of Black resistance in 2017.

The compilation album features productions by both seasoned and emerging Cuban producers including DJ Jigüe (who runs Havana's first independent record label, Guampara), DJ Lapiz or LPZ (producer for Cuban heavy hitters like Danay Suarez and Los Aldeanos), Prófugo (long-time producer for hip hop acts including El Tipo Este of Obsesión) and newcomers DJ Drew and Santiago de Cuba's Kamerum. Artists on the track were hand-selected by musical director DJ Jigüe with guidance from project creator Luna Olavarria Gallegos - who, with artists and organizing grants was able to support the recording process and a 3-day workshop series held in late March 2017.

AfroRazones was created with the intention of supporting Cuban artists and modeling Trans-Latin American solidarity in a digital age; recognizing the workshops and compilation album as part of a greater relationship - a new path of sustainable cultural exchange. Hosted by US-based music and media professionals, Luna Olavarria Gallegos, Laura Catana of Guampara, Nati Conrazon of conrazón and Edenized Perez, the workshops supported each of the Cuban artists by covering topics like the history of the music business, best practices using social media and even individual clinics with each artist to maximize their own platforms to promote not only the project, but future creations.

"We can get ourselves out there and connect with the rest of the world - it's not that we're not capable anymore, yes we're completely capable," said emcee Positivo after the workshops.

"In this moment of global black resistance, it's important to recognize the diversity of identity, race, perspectives and worlds. When we say 'Black Lives Matter' - who are we talking about? Is everyone included? A sustainable future depends on diverse intergenerational relationships. Without the inclusion of historically marginalized voices, that vision cannot be born. For me, AfroRazones is an archive of the past and the future - an opportunity to grow together as artists, Latinoamerican@s and people who believe in a world for our children. Armed with the wisdom of our ancestors, this project is a vision of how transnational relationships could exist. We can't be quite sure of the world that's coming in a post-Capitalist, post-truth, post-internet society. What we can do now is dream and grow together in a humane way. That's AfroRazones," remarked project creator, Luna Olavarria Gallegos.

Cuban hip-hop historian and advocate, Ariel “Asho” Fernández Díaz, had this to say about the project: "It's Rap y R&B with Rumba, with Conga Santiaguera, with Afro-Latin Jazz, with Cuban Son, with Electronic music, with Folkloric music - in the end it's the past, present and future of Hip-Hop Cubano."'

Over the coming weeks, videoclips and photos - by Bay Area-based photographer and documentary filmmaker Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi of FistupTV - will be released from @Guampara's Instagram page using the #AfroRazones hashtag  giving a window and voice to the motivations of the projects narrated by the artists themselves. The first single "Mi Raza" - by Havana-based emcee El Individuo of the promising hip-hop crew "Con100cia" - sums it up well:

"I am from cimarrón, and from Mambí,
From rebels and from MC,
From Bantú, Carabalí, Yoruba y Lucumí,
From Blackness,
From “asere” because I’m Cuban,
And if my culture is an ajiaco,
I identify more with what came from Africa,
From Conga, Congo de tambón, of Quiñongo, Palo, my religion is Ochá,
Hip-hop is the best gift.
I am salsa, songo, timba, the drum cleanses my hand,
Prodigy poet, free artist of the every day."
