REGISTERED NURSES
TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE IN SILICON VALLEY:
INNOVATION AND EVIDENCE
The conference was hosted by the California State University Northern California Consortium Doctor of Nursing Practice Program, San José State University The Valley Foundation School of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau Alpha Gamma Chapter and the California Nursing Students' Association. It was a special event celebrating current and future leaders in nursing practice.
The conference was held on April 22, 2017 at the San José State University Diaz Compean Student Union Theater. Registered nurses, nurse educators, managers and nursing students were able to review 10 poster presentations and enjoy speakers covering a range of related topics like:
- Life purpose
- Innovative Leadership in the Field
- Role of Nurses in Shaping Future of Health Care
- Integrating Environmental Health in Nursing
- Caring for the Homeless in a Turbulent Environment
- Nurse Leaders of Interdisciplinary Teams Who Serve Crime Victims
- Technology Innovations on the Horizon
- Virtual Reality in Nursing and Health Care
There are many conference highlights to share. Among them is Dr. Mercy Egubjor's professional, fact filled and inspiring presentation on caring for the homeless; an important topic given that Santa Clara County has the highest homeless and unsheltered homeless rates in California. As nurses and care givers, she suggested we should work towards promoting human dignity, relieving suffering, and providing hope so that people can reach their full potential and improve their quality of life.
We would like to thank all the speakers, poster presenters and conference attendees for contributing to a successful day of celebration, learning and networking.
Oh my gosh!!!! It was so amazing today. You and your team created a wonderful program. Each speaker was engaging and brought something authentic and heartfelt to the table. Really it was inspiring. THANK YOU, – Tricia
Thank you to all of you and your guest speakers for an absolutely inspiring day! – Maureen
I just wanted to take a minute and let you know how much I thoroughly enjoyed the Nursing Conference at SJSU last Saturday. I can honestly say that it was one of the most enjoyable and motivating conferences I have been to in a long time. Everything seemed to run smoothly, and the presenters were inspiring, even the box lunches were delicious. I have told all my NP friends at Kaiser about my experience and they are looking forward to the next session you will provide (next year?). – Kinga

DNP PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The California State University Northern California Consortium Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program is a post-master’s, joint degree program between Fresno State and San José State.
The purpose of the DNP is to develop advanced competencies for increasingly complex practice, teaching, and leadership roles in nursing, and provide an advanced educational credential for those in practice. The changing demands of this nation's complex health care environment require the highest level of scientific knowledge and practice expertise to assure quality patient outcomes. In addition to meeting requirements of the Essentials of Doctoral Nursing Practice outlined by American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), students complete coursework in teaching strategies, curriculum development, and may elect to complete a nursing education practicum to prepare for faculty roles.
The curriculum allows students to continue working full-time if desired. The format is completely online with minimal campus meeting requirements throughout the program. The program follows a cohort model, with no part-time option. The program is 21 months long; 5 semesters including one summer session. Practicum is a requirement, although the amount varies based on the number of practicum hours documented as eligible through the original post-baccalaureate education. The curriculum may be found on the website via the following link:
