Kia Ora, and welcome to our newsletter.

I have been thinking about the recent investigations that have been triggered in NZ about the locking of children with ASD in time out rooms and the Ombudsman’s Report on the restraint of prisoners who are self-harming. What does this say about our society’s response to risk? We would hope that these are extreme examples of trying to apply control over people’s behaviour rather than asking who is this person? How and what are they trying to communicate and what is important to and for this person for them to feel OK and keep them safe? These are the questions at the centre of a person-centred approach.

This newsletter shares information about Community Circles, HSA Training courses and links to useful resources, all contributing to a more person-centred community.

If you have attended our training or completed our e-learning you can join our HSA Closed Facebook Group. This is a place to share learning around person-centred practice. If you haven’t received an invite let us know.

Starting Community Circles in New Zealand
Carol's thoughts

Community Circles and Dementia Care
When I was in England,Cath Barton, Community Circles Connector in Northern England, invited  me to visit Eachstep in Blackburn, a brand new care home for people living with dementia.  Community Circles has partnered with Eachstep to offer a Community Circle to each person as they moved into the home EachStep Blackburn.
This is a good example of a service that was committed to using Progress for Providers, one-page profiles and person-centred thinking practices.
After a year of operation, this project has recently been evaluated and you can read and hear people talking about individual successes and other important outcomes for the care home and the wider community. Circles at EachStep Blackburn
The home which is part of the charity Community Integrated Care recently collected the top honours at the National Dementia Care Awards, which is the pinnacle of the UK dementia care sector.
In New Zealand the possibilities of partnerships are exciting!

Person-centred thinking
Training courses
If you are an individual or group who has already identified an area you’d like to learn more about, our training courses can give you the skills, tools and knowledge to create person-centred change, and ultimately better lives for the people you work with.

How can we deliver this?
You can do our online learning course in person-centred thinking for everyone, to gain a good overview of how the tools are used and how they help. We can also follow this up with bespoke one-to-one support or group workshops. If you would like to know more get in touch with mariecalderbank@tautoko.org.nz or deborahboyd@tautoko.org.nz and we will find the best way to help you.
We have two Person-centred thinking workshops being hosted by NZDSN in May one in Whanganui and one in Nelson, go to NZDSN Training/Events  for more information and to register.
One of the key person-centred thinking tools you can learn to use is the communication chart. This is a simple but powerful way to record how someone communicates with his or her behaviour.

Helen's talking about...

Helen has been having conversations in the team about some of the common mistakes seen in organisations implementing one page profiles. The ones seen most are valuing creativity over content, inventing new headings and seeing it as a new form.

Here is an excellent checklist that helps us all stay on track with one-page profiles.

What are the most common mistakes organisations make in implementing one-page profiles, and how can I avoid them?

One-page profile of the month
We believe that one-page profiles are the foundation of personalisation, and can lead to positive change for people, whatever their age or circumstances. Our staff have developed one-page profiles to enhance their own working relationships. This month Karen shares her profile. Karen's one-page profile
