Felines and Flowers Keepsake Boxes
These cigar boxes are the old-style cardboard type, the ones we probably all grew up with around the house. I painted the inside of the box leaving some of the text and art, preserved some of the original exterior decoration and trim on a few boxes, added my art and a small ribbon and Velcro closure on the front. It’s a little slow-going since I’m contacting people I’d met years ago to paint their dogs’ portraits. Phone numbers and addresses have changed, and we have much to catch up on with new animal companions and moves. But I want to be sure I have both permission and the best version of each painting. When I created this 16″ round linoleum block print in 2004, I’d intended for it to be versatile. This spring has inspired colors as each flower has bloomed: pink, purple, blue, yellow, and all the shades of green leaves. I added them all to this design.

I relied pretty heavily on cards to get my images to you last year, in part because I couldn't get enough variety and quantity of handmade goods done in time. Twenty-five years ago this year I started the process of building the business I am still working and promoting today, as I mentioned in yesterday’s post about my very first commissioned portrait. Seventeen years ago, I fulfilled a big part of the overall plan that I had worked a decade to reach when, for the first time in forever, I stayed home to go to work.
