Scout.com top name Brown updates on a number of items around Texas, including, for what it's worth, "Keep hearing Texas will have a new athletic director selected by year's end. Mike Perrin's agreement with UT president Greg Fenves runs through the 2017-18 school year. I'll have more on the job Perrin has done as athletic director in the next few days." Additionally, new FB HC Herman is reportedly pushing for less advertising/sponsorship spots on video boards during games & more fan engagement content. Conversations around capacity for the new hoops arena in Austin trending closer to 12K than 16K. (link); The Longhorns are also in the process of hiring a new senior leader to oversee student services, including academic oversight. Former Executive Senior Assoc. AD for Student Services Ryan was previously making $260K in the role. AD Perrin says Assoc. AD for Student Services Hastings will likely not head the unit, but, "she will have a very substantial role in a couple of new things that we’re looking at." The 2015 report by Jackson Lewis big name Marsh stemming from allegations of academic misconduct started the process of a revamp by Perrin, "The way I read the Marsh Report, that office had become a bottleneck, it had too much under it." A bit more. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz provides insight on a lawsuit the NCAA filed against four insurance companies with the aim of recouping some of the $70M+ it has spent on outside legal services over the past 3+ years. "At issue are an array of policies that the NCAA bought in 2005 and from 2012 through 2015 for a combined total of more than $20 million. The policies, according to various court filings, were designed to help protect the association against the costs of antitrust or wage-related lawsuits." The $209M settlement in the Alston case from back in February is also a piece of the puzzle. Virginia law professor & insurance expert Abraham: "This is not a minimal dispute involving small change. This is a substantial insurance complaint." Penn law professor Baker: "...this is a gnarly, highly technical legal area. There’s lots of room for theories under which both sides can think they are going to win." More, complicated. (link); Speaking of insurance, UPROXX's McIntosh goes in on, "Here’s How NFL Draft Insurance Policies Like Jake Butt’s Actually Work." (link)
ACC Commish Swofford in a memo to fellow league brass yesterday, in part, "I write to let you know that I have had multiple conversations with John Skipper, as recently as this morning, and have total confirmation from him that the ACC/ESPN linear network launch is full speed ahead and unaffected by the aforementioned events at ESPN." (link); WRAL's Ovies has covered TV trends pretty closely over the last couple of years, including how as it applies to the coming linear ACC Network, "If I were running a university in the ACC, two of my biggest concerns regarding my partnership ESPN would involve a possible carriage fee fight with cable and satellite providers, and production costs associated with the ACC Network." (link)
Statement from Saint Peter's Prez Cornacchia: "I want to take this moment to correct and clarify some speculation about the departure of former Athletics Director Belinda “Boe” Pearman. Because Boe was dealing with a personal matter, she asked that we keep private any and all information regarding her departure from Saint Peter’s. Unfortunately, keeping a personal matter private generated some erroneous reporting that Boe was fired. Boe was not fired. Moreover, during Boe’s 15 months at Saint Peter’s University, she elevated our athletics program. Boe worked hard for our student-athletes, coaches and staff and we are very grateful for all she did for our program." Pearman notes how a personal issue limited her ability to fully serve as AD, appreciative of Prez Cornacchia's commitment to keeping the matter private. (link)
Because what would a month be without some talk about Big 12 membership moves? In a recent radio interview, the SEC Network's Finebaum said he thinks Oklahoma wants out of the league "pretty desperately." More: "I think the Big 12 is in big trouble, and I think this is something that we have been able to detect for some time. I don't think the Big 12 as we know it will still be in existence in five years. [...] There are schools in the Big 12 that have looked to get out, and I think continue to look to get out and they can deny it all they want, but they don't have what the SEC and the Big Ten, Pac-12 and ultimately the ACC are going to have, and that's their own network, which is critical in this world of exploding television reality. I don't know how you can really survive like that." More. (link)
New Mexico makes it official: Both University Stadium & The Pit will now bear the name of Dreamstyle Remodeling in a 10-year, $10M agreement with $1M going to institution entities, including UNM Children's Hospital. AD Krebs calls the commitment from Lobos alum Chavez, "truly a historic day for our department." Dreamstyle Arena will also see the addition of the 'Larry Chavez & Joyce Hitchner Sports Bar Area inside its U.S. Bank Club & Suite Level as a result of the new partnership. (link); The deal is technically between Chavez's company & Learfield as the multimedia rights holder will receive 10% of the contract value each year. Chavez also freely handed over a copy of the deal specifics to the media, which includes Learfield's $4.8M annual commitment to the Lobos per 2013 figures. The FB program will be a direct beneficiary getting $200K to $400K per year with athletics' general fund depositing $550K to $600K.  (link)
Here is the breakdown of the 306 NCAA Public Recognition Awards, based on APR achievements. Of the 1,203 Division I teams being recognized for academic performance, 746 of them are women's programs while 457 are men's or co-ed. The APR scores for all DI teams, this time covering the 2012-13 through 2015-16 academic years, will be released next week, but we already know that 1,090 teams earned a perfect score. The Ivy League topped the list with 106 honored, followed by the Patriot League (97) and the ACC (88), while Brown and Dartmouth paved the way on the school list with 19 teams earning PRAs. (link)
Montana State AD Costello comments on a new strategic plan for his department, created with the assistance of CarrSports Associates. Core values: Integrity, excellence, respect, engagement, student focused and passion. Strategic themes: Student-athlete welfare, competitive excellence, championship-quality facilities, leading & learning, financial responsibility/sustainability, engagement and inclusion/diversity/respect. Costello: "This process aligns the athletic department with the mission and goals of the university. That gives us the opportunity to utilize resources and engage our constituents appropriately and efficiently." A master facilities plan is also in the works. (link); Here's the full executive summary of the strategic plan. (link)
An Army investigation found that Black Knights FB ACs Bateman and McCartney received game information after getting Wake Forest practice film and its playbook from former Demon Deacons radio analyst Elrod. Army fined and suspended Bateman for his involvement, while McCartney is no longer with the program. The investigation did not result in any evidence of NCAA violations. (link)
More Legal: North Texas has hired Bond, Schoeneck & King to do its own independent review into allegations of organized criminal activity, promotion of prostitution & drug possession that has involved members of the MBB program. AD Baker committed to building the right culture, "We have high expectations of all of our student-athletes and even one incident of misconduct is one too many. The decision by President Smatresk and me to initiate an independent review is a necessary step for our men's basketball program to ensure that there are no additional issues that need to be addressed." (link); Michigan State has sued ESPN in connection to records requests, says it's in an "impossible position." (link); From ESPN's Lavigne: "...the U.S. Department of Education will begin reviewing Baylor's annual crime and safety reports, as well as its drug and alcohol abuse prevention program, required by the Clery Act." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
SI's Mandel yesterday afternoon: "Coaches/ADs from the AAC, B1G, Pac-12, MAC, MWC & Big 12 have arrived here (Phoenix) for meetings and/or the event formerly known as the Fiesta Frolic." (link); Interesting long read from the NYT's Cave on the Australian prep hoops club 'Savannah Pride,' which serves as a tutoring ground for youth & prospective student-athletes from South Sudan. Products of the system are currently on MBB squads at Florida, Miami (FL), TCU & others. The story is not without some friction unfortunately common to the prep basketball landscape, though it's long on the opportunity provided to many from a war torn homeland. (link)

UT Chattanooga AD Blackburn reflects on his name being involved in the Tennessee AD search & how it impacted his operation of the Mocs department, "It was those first three months that caused me so much angst. I've never been in that role. I've never had my name go viral nationally - in some cases bad, some neutral, some positive - but it you've never been in that, it kind of freaks you out. I'm thinking, 'How does anyone know about me?' It's extra stress on you, but you put it on yourself. It's not people on you, it's just people doing what they do. You realize you're never as good as people say you are, or as bad. All those things flee, but what doesn't flee is what you're centered about." Blackburn goes on to recount events & situations with his family that provided perspective & notes how he's now at peace. (link)
Yesterday espnW launched Body Image Confidential, its newest multi-media platform that looks at the "complicated balancing act of maintaining top physical condition for women athletes in the United States, while battling expectations of femininity and physicality." An anonymous survey of 200 DI female student athletes revealed that 54% spend 15+ hours per week on the physical conditioning of their bodies, 14% responded "yes" to having an eating disorder (including 32% of rowers), 20% said their coaches have called them fat, 70% feel pressure to be pretty and 2/3 worry about long-term damage to their bodies. espnW Deputy Editor Holmes: "As we cover women’s issues through the lens of sports, we noticed more and more high-profile pros having to deal with attacks on their appearance and physicality. And we wondered how much college athletes, whose goal it is to maintain peak physical condition, were struggling with these same issues. It’s not new that women struggle with body image, but I was so encouraged that the young women we surveyed don’t fear strength. Strong really is the new beautiful." (link)
Texas Tech AD Hocutt turns to Kent State Senior Assoc. AD Glaus as his new Senior Assoc. AD for Academic Services in Lubbock. Glaus has been a part of the Golden Flashes department for nearly 11 years where he started as a GA back in 2006. For the Red Raiders, Glaus will have oversight of all academic & student services & serve as the "chief academic officer for providing oversight of the NCAA eligibility process." (link)
Baseball America's Cahill writes on the attendance & engagement impact of winning for college baseball programs, though two marketers quoted in the piece point to more than results on the field. Texas Tech & Louisiana Tech are the case studies. The Red Raiders saw their average turnstile numbers surge to 3,851 per game last year, a 59% increase from 2014 when the squad first made the College World Series, a feat it repeated last year. This season has already featured three straight series sellouts, including last weekend's set with TCU. In Ruston, per game crowds are up to more than 1,800 this season from a touch over 1K in 2015. Bulldogs Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Born: "We sell on experience rather than the product. I expected my staff to still go after birthday parties and groups and sell the experience of a college baseball game." More. (link)
HC Notes: Minnesota AD Coyle extends MBB HC Pitino by a year, which could keep him with the Gophers through 2021-22 after a solid bounce back campaign last season. (link); Old Dominion WBB HC Barefoot officially makes the move to UNC Wilmington for the same post. (link); TCU FB HC Patterson made $5.1M in 2015 as the Horned Frogs generated $52M in FB revenues for an $18.5M profit. In the wake of the incident at Fenway Park involving Baltimore Orioles' Jones, Golden State Warriors' Green talks to The Undefeated about the racial taunts he's heard from fans while in the NBA. "I’ve gotten the N-word, all of that. I’d rather not get into [where]. A few places, especially being that it is me. Athletes are just not protected in that regard. Maybe something like [the Adam Jones incident] will help. ... With racism, are you born with it or is it taught? That was the whole initial thought behind [RISE]. And honestly, I think you’re taught it. You’re not born a racist. ... There is a huge need for it because of instances like [Jones’]. You just try to reach as many people and educate as many people as you can. Hopefully, you can make a difference." (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Tennessee AD Currie hits on a number of topics in his most recent letter to the Vols fanbase. Recently met with fellow league ADs in Jacksonville where Commish Sankey "led us in robust discussions about lots of “routine” topics including, but certainly not limited to athletic and academic performance of our teams, fan experience, officiating and future football schedules." Says the group recognizes the importance of "close collaboration and collegiality" to uphold & enhance the SEC brand. Also indicates he's in constant contact with Peach Bowl, Inc. Executive Director Stokan on Mercedes-Benz Stadium construction progress, "(Stokan) assures me that the stadium will absolutely be ready" for opening season kick-off games in Atlanta. (link)
The jury started its deliberations yesterday in the trial involving former Iowa Senior Assoc. AD Meyer. Iowa Asst. Attorney General Carroll in his closing argument: "This case is not about Tracey Griesbaum." One of Meyer's attorney in his: "This isn’t about Tracey Griesbaum. It’s about what the Field Hockey investigation exposed. They found differences in treatment, they found abuse and bullying. Instead of relying on the university’s constant evaluation of a woman losing her temper, perhaps we should ask ourselves why wasn’t anyone else screaming?" Also of note: "The verdict will be delivered in a sealed envelope to Judge Michael Huppert, not read in court." More. (link)
WIth the US Department of Justice announcing that federal authorities won't prosecute the Alton Sterling case, LSU Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Segar sent an email to student-athletes, urging them to react to the ruling with respect and caution and asking them to not wear school apparel or use LSU branding if they do choose to express their opinion. The e-mail reads, in part: "As student-athletes, you are some of LSU’s most visible ambassadors. Many of you enjoy a large following and with that comes responsibility. Remember that what you say and do directly impacts how people around the world view LSU. IMPORTANT: If you choose to express your opinion on this issue, including on social media, we ask that you do not wear LSU gear or use LSU branding." (link)
Upgrades: Georgia Tech boss Stansbury points to moving forward on a $3M to $5M project to revamp FB's locker room, which will be paid for up front. Key Yellow Jackets donor Garrett: "It’s extremely needed and a strategic thing for the football program and the athletic association in general. It’s long overdue." (link); Miami (FL) set to break ground today on a key new piece, the Carol Soffer Football Indoor Practice Facility. UI is the 14th institution nationally to become a part of the "Healthy Masculinity Campus Athletics Project" initiative. Vandals AD Spear voices his department's commitment. A three-day training program, implementation of 'Healthy Masculinity' curriculum & an action plan around prevention/response strategies are all part of the alignment. (link)

(link); Learfield boss Brown is a finalist for EY's Entrepreneur of the Year for the Southwest region, a list full of big corporate biz names.
