Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity...

Rock Climbing at Lighthouse Park!

This spring has not boasted overly stable weather, which means it has been hard to find dry rock! If you are stoked to get out there on real rock, we recommend an afternoon at Lighthouse Park just south of Horseshoe Bay!

There are a variety of top rope-able climbs and the exposed south facing cliffs dry fast and are pretty much climbable all year round.

The routes are all laid out in the Vancouver rock climbing guide book, that we have in the shop currently.

How to Build an Emergency Lean-To

Having the ability to build a shelter in the backcountry is a crucial skill to have in an emergency situation.  The elements are not a human’s friend, and protecting yourself from the cold, wind, rain, or sunlight might make all the difference for your survival in the wilderness.  There are many different kinds of shelters you can make, but in this months “How-To” we will focus on the Lean-To.

  1. As the name of this shelter indicates, you are going to be leaning the walls of this shelter against a solid support.  That could be a rock, a fallen down tree, or even a tree with a large trunk.
  2. Find some thick branches in the area and lean them in a row along your horizontal brace.  These will provide the structural support for the wall so make sure they are sturdy.  Space them out evenly for the length you want your structure to be, and ensure they are far enough away from your horizontal brace to let you fit.  Pro Tip: the shallower the angle and closer it is to the ground, the better it will stand up against the wind.
  3. Place branches across your support beams to help fill in the space.
  4. Finally take more leaves and deadfall and place them on and against the shelter to fill all the gaps.  There you have it, a shelter from the elements!

Light a fire near the entrance of your lean to to keep you warm, but ensure it is far enough away that it doesn’t light your new home on fire!

Keep mosquitos out of your tent

Few things are worse than trying to fall asleep in your tent and hearing the high pitched buzz of a mosquito flying past your ear.  Inevitably you will wake up with a face covered in itchy mosquito bites as that pesty little guy enjoyed a night of feasting…unless you follow this sage wisdom.  Mosquitos are light little buggers (pun intended) and obviously won’t like the wind.  Your tent provides a great wind block for them and you will notice mosquitos congregating on the downwind side of your tent for shelter.  Use this to your advantage!  When you are setting up your tent be sure to take note of the wind direction and set it up with the door facing into the wind.  Remember this tip next time you are out camping and thank us when you wake up well rested with an itch-free face!  You are all welcome.

Winter Ascent of Labor Day Horn

Brette Harrington

It was an overcast day in mid February as we ski toured up the Nesakwatch Valley.  Light snow squalls passed over Marc-Andre and I as we headed up to the Propeller Carin under Mount Slesse.  The rather late start to the day landed us at the bivvy around 5PM where Marc’s gear stash awaited with a tent, stove and climbing gear.  We stomped out a platform in the snow and set up the tent.  As my body cooled off from the hike I could feel the chill of the winter air.  It was getting dark as Marc pulled out the stove to prepare dinner. “Pop!” Like the sound of a cracked knuckle, our gas canister nozzle burst under the frozen pressure and Marc’s ice pick.  It was now spewing precious gas despairingly into the atmosphere.  Marc and I would be rationing out our peanut trail mix for dinner, breakfast and lunch for the following day.  Marc skied back down to the memorial to collect water from the stream and we set the alarm for 3AM.

I shivered throughout the night, tossing and turning to churn the heat in my sleeping bag.  As we woke at 3AM the walls of the tent were coated in a thick frost.  We grabbed a handful of peanut mix and set off into the powdery darkness, leaving our tent pitched at the Propeller Carin….
