Alcohol or cannabis? Read some facts below.
Please note that Dr Serene will be away on a meditation retreat from the 7th of July to the 14th of July inclusive. During this period, the clinic will be operating Monday to Friday, 10 am to 2 pm.
Beautiful people in the Perth western suburbs are much leaner and eat healthier but there's one major issue - alcohol. The latest survey shows that 31% of adults in the Claremont-Cottesloe area drink too much alcohol. I've written about the downsides of alcohol but I think it's worth repeating.

You can enjoy yourself without alcohol. Watch these two cockatoos. One cockie can really let go without any stimulants...
One cocky is having the time of his life, sans alcohol. The other one thinks he needs some to loosen up.
There's a growing interest in cannabis, and for good reason. We've only just discovered the endocannabinoid system with cbd receptors in the brain, gut, muscles etc. This system helps to balance our chemical functions and is the perfect self regulating balancing system that keeps your body and mind in homeostasis. I'll devote another newsletter to all the benefits of medicinal cannabis.
Israel has been leading the way in medicinal cannabis. Cannabis is offered to the elderly in all nursing homes in Israel.
Please note there is a BIG difference between smoking marijuana (with high THC) and consuming medicinal cannabis. THC can wreck your brain and can cause lifelong damage if you smoke a lot in your youth, but it has the opposite effect in the elderly - it sharpens the mind and improves memory. Dosing, cannabis varieties, terpenes etc influences the outcome.... more about it later.

Alcohol affects every organ in the body, especially the brain and liver.

Unlike cannabis, alcohol has no redeeming features. The minute it's consumed, it gets converted to acetaldehyde, a toxin that damages your body and brain.

Just one glass of wine a day increases your risk of dementia.

Alcohol is particularly damaging to females before their first pregnancy.

Drinking just 1 standard drink a day throughout the teens and early 20's increases the risk of breast cancer by 30%. Having the first child later in life is also a risk factor.
Dr Daniel Amien, psychiatrist has catalogued SPECT scans of brains. You can see how alcohol ravages your brain. Some of my patients insist that 3 drinks a day is 'normal', all their mates drink even more. I can arrange a brain SPECT scan if any one is interested.
Ways to reduce alcohol intake.
1. Be honest with yourself. Why do you drink? Many women living on their own are lonely. If there are certain times of the day ( especially evenings after work) when you'd like company, go to a yoga class or gym or do some activity you enjoy.
2. Dilute your alcohol with ice or sparkling water. Better still, replace it with sparkling mineral water and lime. You may be just thirsty in the evenings or after work.
3. Cannabis and low dose naltrexone have been used successfully to reduce addictions.
4. If you're pressured to drink in a social situation, tell your friends your doctor advised you not to drink. It's easier not to drink at all, than to have a small amount and then be pressured to have more.

Alcohol, sun, wind, stress and environmental trauma create free radicals which accelerate ageing: not just wrinkles and hair greying but all organs are affected. Your eye sight can deteriorate from cataract and glaucoma. I'm a big fan of glutathione, your body's biggest detoxifier. That's not an excuse to continue drinking and sun baking. It's to help your organs recover, especially if you have a family history of glaucoma and cataracts.
