COMMUNITY NEWS: BERKELEY
Berkeley police released several images of individuals they are seeking in connection with violent attacks during the protest on April 15. Police are hoping that members of the community will help identify the suspects. 20 people were arrested on the April 15 protest including two who had outstanding warrants for crimes committed on the March 4 protest.
The Berkeley City Council unanimously approved a $62.5 million plan to improve the city’s bicycling infrastructure in a Tuesday night meeting that ran on until 11:40pm PT. The 20-year project will include “a citywide network of low-speed, low-traffic-volume neighborhood street ‘Bicycle Boulevards.'” The "Bicycle Boulevards" will cover all Berkeley neighborhoods, schools, downtown and commercial areas, and the University of California, Berkeley campus.
Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin expressed concern that protestors on the extreme right and extreme left were trying to "turn our city into Fight Club.” Berkeley has become a demonstration battleground following the election of President Donald Trump. The Los Angeles Times interviewed Arreguin and several Berkeley residents on the effects of recent and sometimes violent protests. “We have to find a way to stop this. My nightmare is that someone is going to die,” said Arreguin.
