Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - May 22th, 2017

Dear Friends:

I just wanted to mention how excited I am about the SmallsLIVE Workshops that we have been presenting.  We had pianist Sullivan Fortner give his workshop yesterday to a small but vital audience of musicians.  Sullivan spoke directly and honestly.  He really gave us a personal and insightful view into his musical mindset.  He spoke about practicing and how he approaches his own (very diligent) work by analyzing and compartmentalizing the different aspects of his playing.  Three pianists also had the opportunity to play for him and receive his critical commentary.  As a pianist myself, I found it edifying and fully engaging.

These workshops are all being video recorded and then edited for later release as part of a larger workshop series that will also become part of an academic course.  We have interest from several large universities to create a SmallsLIVE course that will be taught as a musicology class - the current jazz scene through the eyes of Smalls Jazz Club.  We want to present current jazz artists in a live, informal setting, talking about music and art and philosophy.  We also will bundle a personal interview, transcribed and analyzed solos to illustrate their music and, of course, music from our extensive audio/video archive.  As I've always said, the music being created at Smalls and Mezzrow is of historic importance and I believe will continue to have impact on future generations long after the clubs may be gone.

As always, I wish everyone peace and productivity.  Please check our schedules because we have some great music coming up this week.  I hope to see you at the clubs, slap you on the back and thank you for coming out.

Regards,

Spike
