The Peonies Are Coming!
Happy Spring!

Things change so fast this time of year. Everywhere I look there are new surprises. We had a very early tulip crop this season and it looks like the peonies are going to be ahead of last year by a couple of weeks.

Weather is a big topic of conversation for farmers, growers and gardeners alike- we do tend to complain a bit at times. Although we've had some perfect days, this spring there is definitely no lack of moisture. I think the ducks are the happiest of all! There is standing water where there hasn’t been for years and they are sure enjoying every pond and puddle. And with all this rain, they will certainly have all the slugs (a ducky delicacy) they can handle! Our ladies (the chickens) aren’t so thrilled.

Every year things change and this is one of the reasons we diversify with so many (over 300) different types of flowers. Some flowers like it cool, some hot, some moist, some dry. Insect and disease pressure change annually. Like the flowers, each has its own climate they do best in. All this rain has been perfect for our new plantings of shrubs and roses, but it’s making it a bit tough to get the annuals in and the field work done. I look forward to a sunnier week ahead!

Some years I think a saner approach would be to only grow our top 20 flowers, but then spring comes, with all her mood swings, and I’m grateful for each and every stem we grow!

Wedding season is here! Please remember we can only schedule so many weddings a week, so book your wedding flowers early!
