Spanish translation, a film on David Fleming's legacy, and...

Yes, a film!  Oh, and other stuff...

I'm sending another missive just a few months after the previous one, as so much is building around these books

As in the previous update, see opposite for the latest heart-warming reviews.  Incredible.  But that's just the beginning.

The events trailed in my previous letter were wonderfully successful, and on Sunday I led a workshop at the first national gathering of the U.S. Transition movement.

All 180 attendees at that gathering were also gifted a copy of Surviving the Future, courtesy of a wealthy fan of the book, and to honour Fleming's influence on the birth of Transition.

Mark Boyle's piece in The Guardian helped bring Fleming's work to a yet wider audience, and a Spanish publisher has now signed up to translate and publish Surviving the Future for the world's half-billion Spanish speakers!

Meanwhile, readers have been setting up reading groups across the world, from Ireland to Malaysia.

Both Lean Logic and Surviving the Future have featured as Books of the Day for the P2P Foundation.

And plans are developing for the now-confirmed symposium on Fleming's work at Vermont's Sterling College this autumn...
Oh, did I forget to mention the film..?  Yes, it's true, filming is now underway for an hour-long film on David Fleming's life, legacy and vision, provisionally titled The Seed Beneath The Snow!

BAFTA lifetime achievement award winning director Peter Armstrong is at the helm, and I hope to be able to include an early teaser clip in the next update - stay tuned...
David Fleming's award-winning books

As they shall henceforth be known!

Lean Logic was the proud winner of the Best in Category award for design at the New England Book Show.

All credit here goes to the publishers Chelsea Green, who intimated during the production process that they felt they were handling a classic, and put in exceptional love and inspiration as a result.
Influential writer Richard Heinberg's powerful piece "Are We Doomed?  Let's Have a Talk" has been sparking a lot of conversations online this week.

It's well worth a read, and features a recommendation for Surviving the Future as one of two books offering a useful path forward.

New reviews

Snippets from the more than 50 reviews the books have received so far.  If you thought those from a few months ago were good...

"An extraordinary book ... One of the greatest thinkers you’ve probably never heard of ... The concept of a “lean economy” is provocative and will, I predict, eventually enter into mainstream debate ... An invaluable resource ... There is so much more to these books than could possibly be hinted at in a review ... Wisdom waiting to be discovered ... The dictionary has grown a small thicket of bookmarks reminding me what to follow up next ... If I had to pick only one book to save and pass along to future generations, this would be that book."

The official page for the books has at-a-glance summaries of all the reviews to date, videos from the launch events (and of David Fleming), links to the best places to buy the books and much more.
A particularly entertaining interview, with Shaun Chamberlin interviewed on Fleming's ideas by Melbourne, Australia's "Greening the Apocalpyse" crew.
SAVE THE DATE:
Thurs 30th November, 6:30-9:30pm

Breaking News: The Gaia Foundation will mark the 7th anniversary of the death of their friend and fellow Hampstead resident with a celebration of the ongoing influence of his writing.

Shaun Chamberlin will host and speak at the beautiful and historic Burgh House.  After the talk guests will be invited back to Gaia House for the kind of informal drinks and convivial conversation that David was much in favour of!

The booked venue has a capacity of just 70 and tickets are not yet available.

Be the first to hear when they are, by either following Lean Logic on Twitter or keeping an eye on the book tour page.

"It's not necessarily against a system that it collapses, because most systems do collapse in the end.  That's a part of the wheel of life – systems do collapse

So I'm to some extent slightly inclined to forgive capitalism for being about to collapse.  I
mean, there are lots of fine things, lots of love affairs and the like which have come to a sticky end.

On the other hand, it is quite an accusation – quite hard for it to live down – that not only is it based on the ludicrous idea that growth can continue indefinitely, but it's going to destroy the entire planet with it."

"Why do some of the truly great books only emerge and exact their influence upon us after the deaths of their authors?  Perhaps it takes a lifetime to accrue and refine the necessary wisdom.  Or perhaps it simply takes the rest of us too long to catch up.

Like Thoreau, Fleming's masterpiece brims not only with fresh insight into every nook and cranny of our culture and what it means to be human, but with such wit and humour that its challenging ideas and radical perspectives become a refreshing delight.

If we're to have a future worth surviving, these books demand to be read, re-read and - ultimately - acted upon

"A monumental achievement, David Fleming's Lean Logic is an encyclopedic guide to the crisis of industrial civilisation.  I challenge anyone to read so much as a page of it without finding at least one insight worth serious reflection.

Individuals, families, and communities will find it invaluable as a guide to navigating the troubled waters of the future.  It's one of the very few things in recent years I'd place on the same shelf as William Catton's Overshoot or EF Schumacher's Small is Beautiful."
