Have you registered for the Australian Deaf Games?

Due to the impact of Cyclone Debbie in Queensland and Northern NSW, and recent Easter break, the Australian Deaf Games Organising Committee has extended Early Bird Registrations for the 2018 Australian Deaf Games by another month. The extension gives participants, spectators and their families more time to register for the Games. This means the Early Bird Registrations now close on Wednesday, 31st May 2017.

It will be a great event in Albury/ Wodonga and we encourage you to register at http://www.austdeafgames.org.au/. For registration enquiries, please contact Phil Harper – Registrations Coordinator at registrations@deafsports.org.au.

Accessible Arts Update

Welcome to Deaf Arts Network (DAN) feature in the Deaf Herald, I am Riona Deaf Arts Officer from Accessible Arts.

I can’t believe it has been a month since last update. Since then, we’ve made great progress with Auslan Signing Choir and are excited to announce that we have a signing group! We have Nicole Clark as Auslan Translation Interpreter, Andy Dexterity as Conductor because of his strong performance and music background and lastly Leading Deaf Artist – me!

Why me? I asked some of you if you join in but many of you preferred to be involved next year or the year after that! It is an exciting experience so I have offered to take the role.

We still have some spaces for Deaf signers to join in. It’s not too late to join as we formally start rehearsals this week, every Wednesday night from 6pm to 8pm at Accessible Arts, The Rocks. The choir will perform at 5pm on Sunday 11th June.

What else is happening in the arts world?
• Vivid Sydney Festival will start on Friday 26th May to 17th June. The
organisers are looking for some Deaf people to do a paid survey about the
accessible events at the festival. If youre interested in taking part in
the survey, please email me.

• Accessible Arts have regular newsletter which can be found – have a look
at this http://www.aarts.net.au/newsletters/. It talks about who are the
staff at Accessible Arts, and what grants are available for funding for
your creative projects.

• This Saturday, 6th May, there will be a shadow interpreted performance of
El Kid. The performance starts at 1:30pm at Riverside Theatre. The
performance is delivered by Opera Australia and Deaf Children Australia.
