Gopher here, happily providing you with a wide arsenal of educational and recreational events and this month our spectacular Royal GALA! Are you ready for one of Gopher’s biggest events with an amazing three-course dinner for an unbeatable price? Or do you rather enjoy the GALA party on its own? Bring along all your friends and colleagues for an unforgettable night!
There is even a chance to win a free ticket to the GALA with our photo contest! Click your best picture, representing PhD life as the theme, and post it in the Gopher Photography Club on Facebook. If you already bought a ticket and you win the competition, Gopher will reimburse you!
Also the PhD Research Communication Club is having it’s very first gathering! During this meet-up we will share our common interest of communicating research from all different fields to a broader audience and brainstorm about future events. Feel welcome to join us and share your ideas, let us know on the Facebook event if you will be there.

Entrepreneurship Workshop
Entrepreneurship means different things to different people. Some imagine tech geniuses with Silicon Valley startups, while others picture small business owners opening up their shop doors on Main Street. Ultimately, entrepreneurship encompasses these and many other business ventures that share a commitment to turning an idea into a profitable business. According to professor Olga Belousova, from the faculty of economics and business, this is just a very small part of becoming an entrepreneur, which is definitely something that can be learned! To get an idea how, take your first steps of becoming a successful entrepreneur and join this interactive workshop from 6 PM - 10 PM in Harmony building 1312.0024, pizza will be included!

Latin Dance Workshop
Come to upgrade your dancing skills so you can use them at the GALA, or just simply because dancing is so much fun! The one and only Juan Carlos will give a workshop where we will learn 2 different dances: Cha cha cha and Salsa! There is absolutely no experience needed as this will be a basic beginner workshop, also you don't need to bring a partner. The workshop will last 1,5 hours and starts at 16h at SalsaJuanCarlos. One free drink is included!

PhD Movie
This private Gopher event offers PhDs the chance to watch the 'PhD Movie' (from the creators of PhD Comics). The movie is about the experiences and challenges of two PhD students attempting to complete their PhD theses. We will watch the PhD Movie in the UMCG, room, 3216.0062 starting at 5:30 PM, including pizza and drinks for only 4€! To watch the trailer click here.
Due to the terms of the license for showing this movie, this is a private event and only open to PhDs from the RUG and UMCG!

Sunday Board Games - Outdoor Fun
We won't let a 2nd Sunday of the month pass by without fun and games, but of course in the Netherlands we also don't want to miss a sunny moment! This time we are taking our Board Games afternoon to the Noorderplantsoen, so we have the opportunity for outdoor games like Ping-Pong and soccer. Of course you can still bring your favourite games and we can play it in the grass. Don't forget to bring along your PhD colleagues and friends to share some healthy competitive games with Gopher! We will make alternative plans if the weather does not allow for outdoor fun.

16th + 17th of May
Print Your Thesis Workshop
We all have to do it at some point, that is of course if you want to graduate! But how exactly do you prepare to print you hard work, and what is the best way to do this? We are again organising lunch workshops to help you get ready, this time with our best-reviewed printer, Gildeprint. For your convenience we are organising 2 sessions, one at Zernike (16th of May, room 5118.-152, Nijenborgh 4) and another in the UMCG (17th of May, room 3211.0032). Both workshops are from 12:30 to 13:30, free lunch will be included!

20th of May
GOPHER's Royal Gala
Feel like a royal, eat like a pig, party like there’s no tomorrow! We can’t wait for our annual GALA to take place. We made sure that the menu and location are nothing but the best. The 3-course royal dinner will take place in Louis XV, follow the GALA arrows and you’ll find your way. The party will take place right next door, so your full stomachs don’t have to role too far. Until 2 AM we will step into our dancing shoes and party the night away. At least 3 drinks are included (4 if you also join the dinner) and after that the bar is open until as long as the party is going on. Make sure to bring small cash (not a lot of change is available) or you can pay your own drinks also with a debit card.

24th of May
Bowling
The final Gopher event in May, the day before Ascension day, will be bowling. We reserved some bowling lanes for striking fun, the best 3 bowlers will be rewarded with a nice price, in a nearby pub afterwards. And since we don’t want any of you to go thirsty 1 free drink for everyone will be included after the bowling at the award ceremony. We start at 8 PM at the bowling centre and will play for 2 hours.

Public Speaking Workshop
After a very successful workshop in December, Eva Pantelakis is coming back to give more people a chance to leave the stage and be remembered! With her experience in acting and preparing people for Veni, vidi, vici Grant's, she is an excellent teacher in public speaking. As for PhDs this is an extremely important skill, we encourage you all to join this workshop from 6 PM to 10 PM (including pizza and drinks!) in Harmony building 1312.0007.
