‘HEAD’ Lines

Supporting you to help support your children

Dear Parents

At the heart of everything we do at John Hanson is the realisation that the influence we have on the young people in our care is only about 10% of the total influence that goes towards developing them in to the people they become. To this end we want to maximise this 10% at every opportunity.

A huge part of this maximisation is the partnership we form between you, us and your children during the 5 years they spend at John Hanson. The stronger this is the more successful students generally are.

During this 5 year partnership there will be times that you wish to contact the school for a variety of reasons and we want to make sure this is a positive and fruitful experience for you. However, for this to be the case I need your help. During the school day teachers are busy people, either teaching students, preparing to teach students or supporting various other elements of education within the school. This means that it is rare for them to be available to take a phone call or meet with a parent who turns up at the school unannounced.

Therefore, unless it is an emergency, when you contact the school by telephone you will be asked for a contact number and if possible what your  contact is regarding. The relevant member of staff will then get in contact with you within 24 hours. Similarly if you visit the school unannounced you will be asked a few details about who you wish to see and why. This information will be passed on as appropriate and you will be contacted within 24 hours to arrange an appointment. In this way you get to speak with the most appropriate member of staff and they have an opportunity to meet you with some information related to your enquiry.

Linked to both contacting the school by phone and in person, I have instructed my staff that they should not speak with an adult who attempts to take out their frustrations over the phone or in the school reception. While this happens on very rare occasions I have a duty of care towards my staff which I am sure you would wish to respect.

I look forward to productive and successful partnership with you for the benefit of all John Hanson students

Regards

John Hanson has entered an all female team of seventeen into the Cancer Research UK Shine Night Walk on the 23rd September.  This may suggest it’s only a walk, but it is a full marathon distance starting at 9:20pm!

Watch this space over the coming weeks for ways in which you can help us reach our fundraising target of £4000. Below is a link to or online page if you’d like to make a donation:

School Uniform Expectations

Thank you for your continued support for the high standards of uniform that the school insists upon. In order that this continues I have made a few changes to the way we tackle the very small number of students who arrive at school in incorrect uniform.

Since the Easter break students arriving at school in incorrect uniform will not be allowed to attend lessons. We will contact you (usually via Parent Mail) to ask you for permission to send your child home to change, or for you to bring in the correct uniform. If neither are possible your child will work in isolation, away from the main body of the school until such time as the issue has been resolved.

We understand that there are occasional issues with uniform and in these cases students should arrive at school with a note from you explaining both the issue and how it is going to be resolved within the next couple of days.

To remind you:
  • Trousers must be appropriate workwear. Students are not allowed to wear jeans or leggings
  • Only pleated skirts are allowed
  • Socks should be plain black
  • Students must wear leather shoes. Boots and trainers are not allowed
  • Only minimal make up is permitted. Excessive make up and nail varnish will have to be removed. Acrylic/gel nails are not permitted in school.

Attendance expectations

I am writing following the judgment delivered by the Supreme Court in relation to the Isle of Wight Council’s appeal which sought clarification on what is meant by ‘fails to attend regularly’ in the context of a prosecution for unauthorised non-attendance at school.

To clarify the schools position following guidance from the Local Authority:

  • The school will only grant leave in exceptional circumstances.

  • The school also will not  authorise any other absence if a student’s overall attendance is under 90%, unless medical evidence is provided.  90% attendance is the equivalent of 1 day off a fortnight.

I can now clarify that 10 sessions of unauthorised absence in a period of 100 sessions will result in a penalty notice being issued. A session counts as either AM or PM, therefore 1 days’ absence is 2 missed sessions.

Every day at school counts towards your child’s final exam grades, and better exam grades improve their life chances. Please work with us to ensure your child attends school every day.

Yours faithfully

The School Choir

There has been a school choir meeting regularly since last September on Wednesdays after school from 3.15 until 4.00 pm in the PA block. We sang at the Christmas concert in school last December where some of you might have heard us. We would love to welcome new members and also see some of the old faces back again. We are currently working towards a performance at school this summer and also showing the current Year 6 children what they can get involved in when they come to see the school during the Summer term.

We could also have the opportunity to sing in concerts in Andover, Basingstoke and even London, but we need to increase our numbers so we can produce the sound needed to be able to take part in such events. We currently have 10 regular, committed members, but we need to have double that number to really make a good sound. You don’t have to be able to read music, had singing lessons or have sung in a choir before. Complete beginners are more than welcome to come along and join the fun. We sing all types of music. At the Christmas concert we sang the “Circle of life” from Lion King along with a number of well known Christmas songs. Currently we are singing “So Good” from Wicked, a mash up of Adele’s "Rumour has it" and "Someone like you", “Pure imagination” from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well as others, all songs you will know and enjoy.

Feel free to pop along and join us on a Wednesday, perhaps have a taster session – you’re not committed if you decide “it’s not your thing”. We are hoping students from all years will come along, boys as well as girls to give real depth to the sound of the choir.  Hope to see you soon.

See Mr.Adams if you would like to join in.
