Longtime Illinois at Chicago AD Schmidt announces plans to retire after 22 years in the top spot for the Flames. "I owe everything I have to the University of Illinois at Chicago. Being here since the infancy of the Division I era and working to build a quality organization has been an honor. […] To be able to go out on my own terms is not easy in these changing times of Division I athletics. […] UIC is a unique and special place. The future for athletics is incredibly bright and I cannot wait to be the Flames' biggest fan moving forward." Schmidt will officially exit on August 1 & the university says a national search will identify, hire & have a new leader in place by Schmidt's departure date. (link)
Yesterday came reports the Missouri Valley was likely to move forward by adding Valparaiso to its league ranks as ESPN & ASN MBB analyst Adams broke the news. Though no vote by MVC CEOs has been taken yet, Adams said all signs were trending toward the Crusaders as the only addition at this time. (link); Murray State AD Ward quickly went on offense, "The presidents haven’t met or even voted. I was told our site visit was strong and I fully expect us to receive serious consideration amongst the league presidents. I believe we bring as much, if not more, to the table when comparing our history, winning tradition, and incredible fan support." More from Ward via Twitter: "Stop reporting on rumors. If I say we haven't been notified and still in the running, then we are. I have no reason to say otherwise. […] Again, a tweet becomes the source for an article when the discussion and vote HAVEN'T EVEN TAKEN PLACE YET! When are people going to start doing their homework before using other people's sources or report? I commend @AKAJeffBidwell (WPSD sports director) for doing his." (link)
UT Rio Grande Valley AD King was on campus at Central Michigan as the second candidate in the final four phases of the Chips search. As noted yesterday, there's no further information on the AD visits as they're happening on campus, but not open to anyone outside the search committee & key university officials. Per CMU's student newspaper, "Unlike other recent searches conducted by the university, such as the Dean of Libraries, College of Communications and Fine Arts Dean and the Provost, the search for the athletic director does not include public forums for students and staff to participate in." (link)
From WisePies to Dreamstyle, that's the reported naming matriculation for The Pit at New Mexico. The Albuquerque Journal indicates the Lobos will announce Dreamstyle Remodeling as the new naming rights sponsor of the iconic facility today. UNM & WisePies ended their 10-year deal, started in 2014, last week in preparation for the new lead brand. $800K of a contracted $5M was paid by WisePies. No indication yet on what Dreamstyle will pay, but the agreement is expected to include multiple facility naming rights, not just those for The Pit.. (link)
In a podcast earlier this week with SI's Deitsch, high-profile ESPN author Miller said of the ACC Network, "I wouldn't count on it. I think that is part of the recalculation they are doing looking forward, in particular since that will be on the eve of these big rights deals we have been talking about. And they are going to need to save money." Miller's comments came on the heels of Syracuse AD & former ESPN executive Wildhack remarking last week on the same topic, "(The ESPN layoffs) won't impact our deal with the ACC. Our deal runs through 2036. The ACC Network will launch as scheduled in 2019. I think ESPN will put all their muscle and support toward making sure the launch is a success because they are a partner and they have a vested interest in making sure the ACC Network is a financial success." (link); Yesterday afternoon, Miller tweeted, "I'd give upper hand here to Wildhack; he knows more on this. My point simply: nothing certain w @espn future right now other than @nfl." (link)
Alabama's FB staff will see their bank accounts stack in the coming years as pay upgrades were approved by the Board of Trustees yesterday. The story clearly starts with HC Saban & a $4M signing bonus to go along with an overall contract value of $65M - before incentives - through January 31 of 2025. Pay for next year set at $11.25M. Notable on the AC front, outside linebackers coach & headline recruiter Lupoi nearly tops the $1M mark ($950K). More. (link, link); SI's Deitsch: "From reporting within ESPN: There is no current coach ESPN would love to hire more than Nick Saban. Bet he'll be there after contract is up." (link)
llinois AD Whitman, in front of 100+ campus members at a faculty senate meeting, addressed the athletic department's deficit, the school's ubiquitous mascot debate, and paying student-athletes. Believes investing heavily in FB and hoops could lead to $10M to $15M annually in additional tix sales to help cover a deficit that was $6.2M last year. Draws on his campus experience as a student-athlete and administrator, noting that "there are very few populations of students on our campus who are better cared for than our student-athletes" and "somewhere along the line we lost control of the narrative around major college sports." Asserts that the value of a UI scholarship "is not easily quantified" and points out that top FB & hoops student-athletes generate more financial value than their scholarship, value which subsidizes opportunities for their peers. A bit more. (link)
With a renewal rate of 99%, Michigan estimates that it will sell 93K FB season tickets for the upcoming home slate, the most since 2007. The figure includes 21K student tickets. AD Manuel: "We remain incredibly grateful to our loyal fans and community members. We are pleased to expand the base of fans who will be able to enjoy season tickets, including continued interest from our enthusiastic student body. Despite the continued growth in season tickets, we remain committed to offering multiple ticket options to ensure that all fans have an opportunity to join us at Michigan Stadium." (link)
Budget Impact: Wichita State AD Boatright & Senior Assoc. AD for Business Operations Klitzke review the financial dynamics of the coming move to the AAC. Boatright indicates interest for sponsorships has already started to increase with the news, plans to cover $2M+ in additional costs by upping ticket & donation levels, a strategy about which he's been forthright with WSU fans. Klitzke notes the increase in travel costs (+$900K in total), both commercially & privately, with a wider league footprint, as well as starting from scratch on NCAA MBB Tourney unit payouts. (link); Eastern Illinois' 21-sport portfolio, the largest in the OVC, is under thorough review by university leaders as an enrollment dip in Charleston & state funding issues could lead to the elimination of four sports. AD Michael notes the reality of the situation, Prez Glassman says if cuts are to be made, the sooner the better for all parties involved. (link)
It's Personnel: How about this new additional title for Richmond Women's Swim & Dive HC Barany, 'Director of Athletic Innovation.' Barany: "Things are moving so fast, so fast, not just with wearable technology but with video and the ability to get all of the stats for the ball sports. If we don’t have somebody watching it, we’re going to get smoked. […] (Spiders AD) Keith (Gill) designed this to be a fluid position, so we can adapt and see where there are opportunities to get better. I think this can help the administration prepare for what’s next. I think it can help campus have an understanding of what’s coming along." (link); Southern Utah AD Butikofer promotes COO Parrish to Deputy AD. (link); Notable sports executive Dee, who was reportedly involved in the Boston College AD search, announced as CEO of Entercom Communications, which owns & operates the likes of WEEI/WBZ in Boston, WFAN in NYC & WJFK in Washington D.C. Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Following the conclusion of the NFL Draft, SI.com's Thamel looks at student-athletes skipping non-CFP bowl games to avoid injury and potential millions in lost income. Notre Dame HC Kelly and UCLA HC Mora downplayed the scenario, while Penn State HC Franklin joined them in acknowledging both sides of the debate, and SEC Commish Sankey offers that "clearly, this makes one attentive in a brand new way." As might be expected, Clemson HC Swinney was less measured in his comments: "Why play at all your senior year? Why play at all? That’s my personal opinion. But to each his own. If I have someone who doesn’t want to play, don’t play. Just let me know so I can get the next guy ready and we’ll put the next 11 out there and compete." One NFL personnel director expects more top S-As to pass on bowl games, noting "the NCAA isn't paying them," but offers that "if you are not a top pick, your ass better play." (link)

In addition to Saban's pay in Tuscaloosa, new Alabama AD Byrne sees his five-year deal approved that starts at $900K in base & increases by $25K each year. Includes total bonus upside of $220K annually. UA paid Arizona $50K to get Byrne out of his pact in Tucson. Comparative figures: First-year Florida AD Stricklin's base pay is $1.076M, new Tennessee boss Currie's is $900K, former Crimson Tide AD Battle was getting $620K. (link)
Speaking of Tucson, conversation around the new student fee at Arizona set to be routed to athletics continues to get discussion. Student Body Prez Finnegan calls the situation a "prisoner's dilemma" for UofA students, "You basically can choose to cooperate or you choose to not cooperate, but not cooperating runs a greater risk. After ASU passed their $75 per semester fee, the university saw it as a necessity to be able to keep up with the Pac-12." Former Wildcats AD Livengood with perspective on the need for more monies to upgrade facilities, "Every year you don’t do it, it becomes more expensive and it becomes much harder to fix each year that you allow it to deteriorate. […] The hardest thing to manage is trying to get coaches and staff to understand the difference between a need and a want. It gets blurred so easily . . . coaches tend to think everything’s a need." More. (link)
Joseph Greenwald & Laake PA civil litigator Markovitz on the developments around North Carolina's academic saga lawsuits, one of which was recently turned back at the federal level, "This is potentially a huge loss for the plaintiffs because of the influence that North Carolina basketball has in the state. As much as the judge may be impartial ... the idea is that a federal judge is more insulated from the politics and finances than a state court judge would be." Duke sports law professor Haagen: "These cases are hard to win. A lot is going to depend on the facts when we get to the merits in state court. The issues that are going to be looked at are the degrees of steering. There is steering and then there is steering." This one is worth signing up for Law360's free seven-day trial. (link)
Very interesting read shared by LEAD1 with thoughts from Ropes & Gray tax partner Spitzer on the potential taxation impact of compensating student-athletes. Of note: "Their status as employees would likely change everything, and attempts by Congress and the IRS to 'help' would probably only make matters worse," no major indication the NLRB will revisit the unionization debate for student-athletes. Also, "The likely result would be that the entire scholarship would become taxable as bargained-for consideration for services" (think $25K in taxes on a $70K full cost of attendance scholarship), student loans to cover taxes would be "impractical or impossible." Lots more. (link)
SportsDay's Carlton asks "Can Flashy Lockers Translate To Wins? In Austin, UT coach Tom Herman Is Ready To Find Out." Herman, who told Texas Prez Fenves in his initial days on campus "You've got crummy facilities," defends the $10,500 lockers: "The last I checked, Clemson's brand new state-of-the-art facility wasn't cheap, and Oklahoma's brand new renovation wasn't cheap, so to have the best in the country, it costs money. In order to recruit the best players and give your players the best training facilities in the country, you've gotta have the best facilities in the country, and that costs money. ... There's a chicken-or-the-egg thing, too. If you win, you get the facilities. I would argue that you need great players to win, and great facilities attract great players. That needs to be constantly on our mind, that it is a huge, humongous recruiting tool that costs a lot of money." (link)
More HC Notes: Washington State AD Moos says "go" to the rollover in MBB HC Kent's contract that could now keep him in Pullman until 2022. (link); Michigan AD Manuel will hire both a new Men's LAX HC & Women's LAX HC. (link); Pittsburgh Gymnastics HC Yohman retires after 31 years with the Panthers. (link); North Dakota AD Faison says he's working on a new deal for MBB HC Jones, one that technically expired on the 1st of this month. Jones is currently working under a two month deal as the pair negotiate the longterm solution. (link); Arizona MBB HC Miller notes how many of his peers around the nation reached out after another Elite Eight loss, also indicates he's going to work on subduing his sideline demeanor starting next season. MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
The media spotlight in Tallahassee has been focused squarely on Florida State for the last couple of days & there's more, starting with the premier accomplishments of so many Seminoles women's programs. AD Wilcox: "Well, we're lucky that we hired very good coaches in each of those sports (Softball, Beach Volleyball, Track & Field, Golf, WBB)." Wilcox goes on to note the ability to provide all sports what they need to achieve national success. (link); FSU will spend $2M to upgrades its Seminoles Productions in preparation for the full ACC Network launch in 2019. That's on top of $3M already invested to "enhance work flow for sporting events." Work to be done now to give staff a year to get up to speed. (link); Wilcox also points to fixes for the Champions Club in Doak Campbell, as there were plenty of buyers for the new space last season, but not plenty who sat outside in their actual seats in full view of TV cameras. Wilcox says the issue is shade, talks about a potential cabana configuration with in-seat beverage & concession delivery, "...how do we make those seats maybe even more premium?" (link)
The defense has rested in the trial of former Iowa Senior Assoc. AD Meyer's employment discrimination suit against the university, with closing arguments scheduled for today. Recent testimony centered around Meyer's claim that she suffered nearly $1M in lost pay and emotional damages, while UI called an economist who set her lost wages at $500K. Testimony was also heard about Meyer's removal from the UI Presidential Committee on Athletics equity subcommittee, with the chair stating that she told AD Barta: "‘I don’t want Jane Meyer at equity subcommittee meetings. I believe she has an agenda and she’s trying to hijack our meetings." Meyer's partner, former UI Field Hockey HC Griesbaum, whose dismissal set off this series of events, has her own case against UI scheduled to be heard in June. (link)
SBJ/SBD's Smith notes the campus assets JMI leveraged to get Kroger on the hook at Kentucky, wonders if the agreement could be a bellwether for others. JMI's UK Sports & Campus Marketing Prez Archey: "The challenge was how to make this work. They were interested in a comprehensive agreement that would be more than just putting a sign on a stadium, so we had to create programs that would extend beyond branding and into campus and the community. […] The campuswide marketing piece showed them that there could be an ROI. What it shows is that selling athletics and campus together can be very complementary. It’s a great case study to see how we can deliver against it. Over time, it could be a way to prove the concept." (link)
Upgrades: Nicholls State is enhancing parts of Guidry Stadium in time for first kick this fall. Enhancements include the installation of GeoGreen Replicated Grass for $600K, a new elevator for $500K and the potential for a new scoreboard, already paid for by a donor. (link); Renovations are well underway at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena, new completion estimate has the Wildcats back in the venue earlier than expected, in time for Fall 2018. (link); South Dakota State raised $1M and change during the annual Jackrabbit Athletic Scholarship Auction last weekend, crushing the previous fundraising record of $603K set in 2015. (link)
Around Higher Ed: Utah Prez Pershing will exit following the back & forth with key supporter & donor Huntsman. Says he planned to announce in August that he would step aside after the 2017-18 school year, but now Pershing will give way once a new leader is hired. (link); Missouri has a new interim Chancellor in Provost Stokes. (link); Indiana State will work with Storbeck Pimental in its process of hiring a new Prez. (link); Oakland's faculty does not want former Kelly Services CEO Camden as the school's new Prez. (link); Texas Chancellor McRaven gives up his seat on the $39.4B University of Texas Investment Management Co. board in order for a rep from Texas A&M to be added. And, of course, the historic FB rivalry between the two is mentioned. (link)
Also Noticed: Holy Cross Women's Ice Hockey is headed to the Hockey East. AD Pine: "Part of the announcement now a year early is we are getting into the recruiting conversations and I think young women are looking at Holy Cross a little bit differently as they explore their collegiate hockey opportunities." (link); Georgia AD McGarity upon learning the Bulldogs wouldn't host NCAA Men's Tennis competition for the next five years, "I was just sick to my stomach. I couldn’t eat I was so disappointed. It hurt me to call Manny and tell him. That was a phone call I was not looking forward to. It’s just part of the disappointment. It’s unfortunate but we respect those who have to make these tough decisions." (link); Colorado State gets a dedicated beer brand from key partner New Belgium: Old Aggie. (link); A number of media buyers question Facebook's video monetization plans & the effectiveness of 15-second mid-roll ads. (link); The lawsuit brought by Louisville students against Katina Powell has been tossed out. (link); ESPN: With partner Greenberg reportedly getting his own morning TV spot, speculation now has sidekick Golic partnering with notable host Wingo for a new radio show. (link)
Correction: Kent State never was & never will be the "Zips." Total brain freeze on my part yesterday morning when referring to the "Golden Flashes."
1.Question brought to you by Turnkey Search
With Syracuse AD Wildhack offering key perspective on the moves at ESPN, here's a useful 1.Q from last Fall when the Orange boss talked about the NFL ratings slip & if a continued trend could potentially impact college FB down the road. Wildhack also provided context on what constitutes a "big rating" in NFL & CFB terms, the need to think about pace of football games just as much as their length, surprises in his early tenure at SU & more. Listen by clicking the link. - link (length - 11:09)
