Childhood Respiratory Pathways
Winter is approaching and there will be busy times ahead.

To make life easier for the hard-working GP, there are now a number of localised childhood respiratory pathways.

These include 'not to be missed' red flags and up to date assessment and management guidelines. There are also useful clinical resource links for asthma action plans and instructions for patients.

These pathways have been reviewed by Dr Tim McDonald, Paediatrician at Canberra Hospital.

Childhood Respiratory Pathways include:

The Influenza immunisation pathway contains details of all the indications and dosage regimes for vaccinating children this season.

A word from the Southern NSW GP Clinical Lead

Whether you’ve been working in an area for a long time (17 years for me!) or are new to an area, you can always learn something from HealthPathways. With winter coming, how about checking the respiratory pathways?

While we still have a number of respiratory pathways to localise, COPD pathways have been live since 2015 and are now due for review. Check them out and send any feedback you have via the  located on each page.
  • The Spirometry pathway is very useful as it provides guidance for GPs on the evaluation of spirometry results.
  • HealthPathways makes keeping up to date with all of the new COPD medications straight forward via the Medications in COPD pathway.
  • The Late-Stage/Palliative COPD pathway can help you through the challenging process of treating during the end stages.
Did you know that Pulmonary Rehabilitation services in SNSW do not require a respiratory physician referral? They accept referrals direct from GPs!  Information like this on HealthPathways referral pages helps you make the best and quickest referrals for your patients.

HealthPathways are written by GPs for use in primary care and aim to be current, user friendly resources. Even an oldie like me uses HealthPathways every day in my practice. Remember, even the non-localised pathways have great clinical information. Funnily enough, New Zealanders have pretty much the same illnesses as we do!
