New 1.Question Interview Below: Scott Corley // Athletic Director // Belmont (Part I)
Oklahoma Senior Assoc. AD for Administration & Development Alford gets the call at Central Michigan, will begin as the AD in Mount Pleasant on July 3rd. CMU Prez Ross: "We had a pretty broad array of candidates from across the country. Michael stood above in my conversations with him." Alford points to OU boss Castiglione & former Alabama AD Moore as examples of how he'd like to lead, "I'm going to be listening a lot. You've got two ears and one mouth for a reason. That's what I'm going to be doing, hearing visions." As a sub note, the end of the first link indicates Eastern Michigan will start its interview process next month. More. (linklink)
The AAC Board of Directors has approved a contract extension for Commish Aresco, which could keep him with the league through June 2022. Connecticut Prez/AAC Board Chair Herbst: "Mike is a strong commissioner who is respected by the institutions and presidents within the Conference. It is important for the American to have excellent, consistent leadership, and that is what Mike provides." Aresco says he is "extremely proud" of the conference's progress and credits conference presidents and ADs with making "the commitment necessary for us to become a Power 6 conference and have, in a difficult environment, provided the vision and resources that heave enabled our student-athletes and coaches to compete at the highest level." (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz with all kids of financial data: Duke MBB HC Krzyzewski reportedly earned nearly $9M in 2015, including $2.2M in deferred compensation on prior years' returns. The net total of $6.8M would still likely have put him ahead of Kentucky HC Calipari and Louisville HC Pitino, both of whom earned over $6M for the 2014-15 season. Blue Devils AD White credited with $1.45M+, up $450K from '14. Other compensation listed in the return include FB HC Cutcliffe ($2.6M) and WBB HC McCallie ($1.2M). (link); Pac-12 boss Scott pulled in $4.2M in 2015 as the league distributed $28.7M per institution for FY16. Former Pac-12 Networks Prez Murphy-Stephans earned $1.3M. (link); At USC, former AD Haden was paid nearly $2.8M in 2015, which included a $1M bonus. During his five years leading the Trojans, Haden generated $12.9M, $4.8M of which was in the form of bonuses. Data also included for former FB HCs Kiffin & Sarkisian. (link); Notre Dame AD Swarbrick credited with $3.1M worth of earnings in '15, though $900K of it was deferred comp. Subtracting that amount, $2.2M is up $600K over any other year for the Fighting Irish boss. Former FB HC Weis is finally off the books. More. (link)
Truly a must-read from SBJ's Smith as he weaves together an oral history on the creation & first 10 years of IMG College through the voices of some the biggest business names in the industry. Current JMI headliner & former IMG/Host lead Stultz: "The business 10 years ago was a bunch of entrepreneurs who thought they’d be doing this the rest of their lives, but it kept getting more and more expensive to play. The ability to get an infusion of cash and maybe a competitive advantage was attractive." Former IMGC executive Pat Battle: "Did it succeed? Ten years ago, the vision was to make the collegiate market more relevant and to expose more people to the attributes of college. I think you’d have to say it’s a very resounding yes." Also includes the likes of Learfield Prez/CEO Brown, former ADs Battle & Dodds, the former of whom executed on both sides of the table, Fermata Partners Co-founder Eiler, Bruin Sports Capital's Pyne & The Whitener Co's Logan, who were all also both right in the middle. More. (link); Smith also pens further on the rebranding of CLC to IMG College Licensing. Managing Director/SVP Moss: "We’ve been talking about a rebrand for a while and when would be the right timing. What struck us is all the resources we can bring to bear from WME-IMG to better serve our partners. Our brand needs to change to match the resources we can bring to our partners." (link)
CBS Sports columnist Dodd reports that a preliminary NCAA survey of on-field FB coaching staff sizes reveals Notre Dame to have the most (45), followed by Texas (44), Georgia (42), Auburn (41) and Michigan (40). Big 12 Commish Bowlsby, chairman of the NCAA Oversight Committee, adds some perspective, saying those numbers should be taken with "six or seven grains of salt," as those numbers, along with the 122 other FBS programs, were compiled from simple website searches. The results come amid discussions about the role staff size plays in competitive advantage, one of two major issues which will receive a comprehensive examination this year, according to Bowlsby. To illustrate the preliminary nature of the survey's results, Dodd points to Alabama, which is credited with having 31 total staff members, including just one strength and conditioning staff member: "A quick check of Alabama's own website shows the program employs the NCAA maximum of five strength coaches." The survey reveals that the B1G has the highest average staff size at 31.6, while the Pac-12 has the lowest average among Power 5 conferences, at 28.6. (link)
Michigan State AD Hollis on recent challenges in East Lansing, "I’m an AD that cares passionately about Michigan State and East Lansing and our state. The situation’s been challenging for everybody. At the same time there’s much good that’s going on, on campus right now that I guess somewhat for good reason has been overshadowed by some very serious issues. [...] Patience is challenging for everybody, yet as leaders you have to have that patience and you have to allow the process to take place and I have great respect for those that are managing the process. I’m waiting on a number of these cases before we’ll address them, and that’s what I have to do." (link)
ACC officials are expected to discuss scheduling multiple league games to open the 2019 FB season, which will coincide with the early days of the ACC Network. Daily Press columnist Peel posits that "in theory, this would not only drive ACC Network ratings, but also pressure cable providers to carry the channel." Peel also breaks down the schedule as it stands, observing that seven conference members have week one matchups that would be too difficult or expensive to move, including Miami v. Florida, Duke v. Alabama and Florida State v. Boise State. That leaves seven other teams with more flexible week one matchups, and Peel posits that the most appealing would be Clemson v. Georgia Tech. Going forward, Peel also observes that games scheduled against FCS opponents early in the season are likely to change, citing Commish Swofford, who points out: "You want to have a quality [network] launch, and certainly games that are appealing are really important. And not only in that particular year. We are spending a lot of time thinking about scheduling. ... There are some concerns about those [FCS] games being frontloaded on everybody's schedule. That's probably not good going forward with our business decisions and scheduling decisions related to the [ACC Network]." (link)
Opinions continue to differ among Big Ten ADs and FB HCs concerning the introduction of Friday night kickoffs, and Northwestern AD Phillips attributes part of the conflicting viewpoints to "local politics, if you will. What does it feel like in Evanston versus what does it feel like in Lincoln or feels like in Iowa City or Columbus, Ohio. And the more we can allow those schools to locally have influence over what we do on Friday nights, the better off we'll be." Administrators from a number of state high school associations met with all 14 B1G ADs earlier this week, and Phillips says it is vital to hear their perspective on how intrusive Friday B1G kickoffs would be on HS FB. (link)
Notre Dame & Boston College were singled out as institutions that haven't signed the NCAA's diversity hiring pledge & both release statements on the situation. From South Bend, Prez Jenkins "feels strongly that principals of such importance should be authored and pronounced by Notre Dame itself and applied university-wide, and not as the product of an association focused exclusively on collegiate athletics." Notre Dame also adds that the diversity in its athletic department "is not where we want it to be, and that's being addressed soon." From The Heights, BC Prez Leahy indicates the pledge isn't strong enough, points to the recent hire of AD Jarmond & says he'd be in favor of a Rooney Rule in college athletics. Georgetown AD Reed: "A lot of people like to blame the NCAA for the ills of college athletics. … It's a membership organization, and the membership is the schools. This is up to us." (link)
LSU AD Alleva points to the addition of a food court & sports bar in place of the dorms nearly demolished at the south end of Tiger Stadium. No stated timeline on the project, though Alleva does say he continues to be hopeful that SEC leaders will relax the alcohol sales restrictions at sports contests, "it’s the presidents’ decision, not an athletic directors’ decision." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
For now, Pope Francis will have to be content with a winged helmet as the only B1G memorabilia adorning the Papal Apartments when Michigan takes on Ohio State next fall, as OSU AD Smith says a visit to Rome is not in the foreseeable future for the Buckeyes. Still, Smith acknowledges that creativity is important in generating interest and says OSU coaches and players are working to get Chance the Rapper to visit the Hayes Athletic Center prior to a scheduled concert in Columbus. "I think you gotta do everything you can to be creative, whether that's taking your team somewhere else or whether that's changing the colors of your uniform. All of us laughed at Oregon when they started doing that, and they had a pretty sweet run." Northwestern AD Phillips advocates for learning experiences such as taking student-athletes abroad, saying more colleges should try to examine similar opportunities. "I think all of that is positive. I just do. What Michigan did was admissible. And good for them and their kids to have an experience of a lifetime." (link)

San Diego State announces it has renewed its apparel deal with Nike to run through the 2023-24 season, and Aztecs AD Wicker contends that the new agreement "shows that Nike believes in San Diego State and the success we've had. We're a brand they want to be associated with." SDSU will not receive cash as part of the deal, although Nike will provide $1.2M worth of products to the school's 19 programs. Particulars of the deal include "2-for1" arrangements; for example, if SDSU orders 350 pairs of FB cleats per year, for every two shoes the school orders, it gets one free. Or, if SDSU orders 500 pairs of FB gloves, for every pair thereafter, Nike will provide an additional pair for free. One thing SDSU won't do, according to Wicker, is wear multiple uniform combinations. (link)
The NCAA DI Softball Committee has released a statement concerning Minnesota's seeding and explains that it puts an emphasis on performances against 25 teams, along with other factors including strength of schedule. "When the committee compared Minnesota against other teams being considered for the top 16 seeds, Minnesota did not have as many regular season Top 10 and Top 25 wins as compared to other teams. The teams that were selected as the 16 seeds had at least one or more Top 10 wins and between four to 18 Top 25 wins. Minnesota did not have any Top 10 wins and only two Top 25 wins. Furthermore, Minnesota's strength of schedule was 114. The top seeded teams had strength of schedules ranging from 1 to 36. Again, this was a very difficult decision and should not take away from the season Minnesota has had thus far. We are excited about the parity in Division 1 Softball and look forward to a great tournament." (link)
HC Notes: Oregon Baseball HC Horton is in the final year of his contract & will likely not discuss his future with AD Mullens or Executive Assoc. AD Roedl, who serves as sports facilitator, until after the season. Wants to stick in Eugene, but either way says the situation doesn't keep him up at night. (link); West Virginia FB HC Holgorsen & AD Lyons have committed to upgrading the Mountaineers analyst staff. Lyons: "In some places I’ve seen $40,000 and $50,000 and in other places here lately I’ve seen $150,000 and $200,000 (for an analyst). It varies from school to school, so for us, whatever that’s going to be will depend on the experience of the person coming in and what they have to offer." (link); CBS Sports lead Dodd relayed comments from SEC FB HCs during a media call, concern around the new early signing date. (link - scroll down)
Arms Race: Penn State AD Barbour, "The arms race is a reality in what we do. We don't have to win it, we don't have to lead it. We've got to run the race. We have to be providing the facilities that meet the teaching, learning and training needs of our student-athletes on a daily basis. Does it need to be more than that? That's not who we are. That's not how we do things." (link); South Carolina AD Tanner indicates an indoor track, plus a dedicated Hall of Fame area may be next up as projects for the Gamecocks. (link); Here's a quartet of development photos from UAB's coming Legacy Pavilion for FB. (link); Colorado is getting a new center-hung, four-sided jumbotron inside the Coors Events Center. Renderings included. (link)
This one number arguably tells the entire story of Liberty's push to become a national FB name: $1.32M. That's how much the Flames will pay Old Dominion to travel to Lynchburg for the opening match-up of the 2018 season. AD McCaw says the sum is possible due to a guaranteed game in the other direction benefiting the LU pocketbooks. Here's how The Virginian-Pilot's Minium opens his piece, "With millions of evangelical Christian adherents, 100,000 online students and an endowment of $1 billion, Liberty University has financial resources unavailable to most mid-major schools, and the Flames appear willing to open their checkbook for their football program." Article includes the full game contract. (link)
The latest from AthleticDirectorU is a podcast with notable Fishbait Marketing Prez Jones in a conversation led by 2D Consulting's Durham. Titled, "Words Of Wisdom From The Old Captain," Jones recounts a number of his more memorable moves around the marketplace & what he sees around the landscape today. Of note, Jones believes ADs & other decision-makers, "fail to look at their product through the eyes of someone who's never been there." Challenges leaders to "look at your entire set of fans" & think about individual experiences, not just those for the premium ticket holder. Lots here, good use of 20 minutes, especially for you marketers out there. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
In the leadoff of a three-part series Vaught's Views contributor Peel says Kentucky is "lucky to have Mitch Barnhart." Peel: "He has doggedly pursued capital improvements for UK’s many facilities to make the fan and player experience much better. Included in that list of improvements are a $120 million dollar football stadium renovation, a $45 million dollar best-in-class football practice facility, the state-of-the-art $30 million dollar Joe Craft Center used by men’s and women’s basketball, and new facilities for softball, soccer, track, golf and now a new baseball stadium. Did I mention that he has done all that while maintaining a fully self-sufficient athletics department that receives no funding from the state of Kentucky or the University? Barnhart also provides an annual $1.7 million dollar contribution to the University scholarship fund and has funded $65 million dollars towards the new $100 million dollar Academic Science Building. All of that just scratches the surface of what Mitch has accomplished at UK in his 15 years here. But as the title implies Athletic Director is about improving athletics. You may be saying 'all that financial stuff is fine but what about how the teams perform on the field?' You may be surprised by that also. I know I was." Stay tuned for part two, which will cover on-field success. (link)
More from Big Ten meetings as Illinois AD Whitman fielded questions during a break in Rosemont. Uses the word "embracing" in regard to the Illini's two Friday night FB games. Thinks the changing perception of Illinois sports is "certainly more of an intangible feeling than anything." Whitman's take on new MBB HC Underwood: "He is just everything I had hoped he would be and more. He’s a wonderful guy. He’s very competitive. He does a great job of connecting with people. He’s very much a people person. He likes being in the room. He likes visiting with fans, donors, parents, student athletes. He does a great job of connecting with each of them in an individual way. He’s tireless. His work ethic is tremendous." As far as the ongoing mascot discussion in Champaign, says the timetable for a resolution falls with the chancellor's office, but that the overall process is "something that creates tremendous amount of tension and creates a lot of time spent from people like me that could be spent in other ways. A bit more. (link)
Houston AD Yurachek creates his Athletics Cabinet, marked by a quintet of promotions: Assoc. AD for Business Finance Collier bumped up to Senior Assoc. AD for Finance & HR, Assoc. AD for Compliance DuBois moves to Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance, Academics & Financial Aid, Assoc. AD for Auxiliary Services Gregory to Senior Assoc. AD for Event Operations, Facilities & Grounds, Assoc. AD for Capital & Special Projects Meagher up to Senior Assoc. AD for Capital Projects & Assoc. AD for Communications Bassity to Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications & Digital Media. That group, along with Yurachek, Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Chizer & Senior Assoc. AD for Resource Generation Julich will make-up the Cougars cabinet. (link)
The Office of Civil Rights is looking into alleged Title IX violations at Southern Illinois in connection to the discontinuation of Tennis, despite the Salukis spending a year "researching the financial, personal and Title IX implications of dropping" both sports. AD Bell and his staff also reduced men's swimming and diving scholarships from 9.9 to 6.0 beginning next year. Former Women's Tennis player Deckmann and former Saluki coach Auld filed a complaint in March on Title IX violations, much of which references Helen Grant Consulting's study from February that points out male participation was 7% less than female in the 2015-16 academic year, proportional to the student body. More, including standard comments from AD Bell. (link)
The Omaha World-Herald's Shatel succumbs to the eye ball play, writes on the potential of Oklahoma exiting the Big 12 & reuniting with Nebraska in the Big Ten. Works through the potential scenarios of the Sooners to the B1G, but thinks OU fits better in the SEC. "Oklahoma has a pretty good setup in the Big 12, but it’s not perfect. The Sooners don’t carry the cache of Texas in the league. Boren wanted the league to expand. How did that go? […] I’ve seen enough in this crazy world of realignment to never count anything out. What I will predict is that Boren will never stop playing the game. And Nebraska will keep an extra plate handy for Thanksgiving. Just in case." (link)
Also Noticed: Western Kentucky partners with IMG Learfield Ticket Solutions for its outbound sales efforts. Not sure I had seen this number before: IMGLTS did $115M in ticket sales in 2016. (link); The College FB Playoff title game will include a featured music artist right outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium at halftime. Team bands will still do their thing on the field. (link); Former Kentucky Assoc. AD & MBB staffer Smith pleads not guilty. (link); The co-branded debit card play generated $50K for UT Arlington. (link); ESPN's SportsCenter pivoting a bit, unveils the 'Right Now' brand to leverage highlight packages & updates at the top of every hour, within halftime shows of premier events & greater digital presence. (link); Maria Taylor to replace Sam Ponder on College GameDay. Laura Rutledge gets the hosting assignment for SEC Nation. (link); Another NBA jersey sponsor, this time it's Goodyear & the Cleveland Cavaliers. (link)
