Mechanical Engineering alumnus Mike Cook (B.S. '08) was a member of the Daytona 500-winning team of Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) this past February. He was involved with Terps Racing during his time at the University of Maryland.

Mechanical Engineering Welcomes New Faculty Member Axel Krieger
Before joining the University of Maryland faculty, Krieger was the Assistant Research Professor and program lead for Smart Tools at the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children’s National.






Yu Promoted to Professor
Associate Professor Miao Yu has been promoted to the rank of Professor by University of Maryland (UMD) President Dr. Wallace Loh.




ME Faculty Part of Nextflex Winning Team
Two University of Maryland (UMD) Department of Mechanical Engineering faculty members, Assistant Professor Siddhartha Das and Jeong H. Kim Professor Abhijit Dasgupta, are part of new research team that recently received funding through a NextFlex award for their project “Conformal Printing of Conductor and Dielectric Materials on Complex 3-D Surfaces.”


Aute to Receive ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award
Associate Research Scientist Vikrant C. Aute has been named an American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Distinguished Service Award recipient for 2017.





Firebaugh Awarded ASNE Harold E. Saunders Award
Glenn L. Institute Professor of Engineering and Professor of Practice Millard S. Firebaugh was recognized by the American Society of Naval Engineers with the 2016 Harold E. Saunders Lifetime Achievement Award) for significant contributions to naval engineering.

Mechanical Engineering Design Day Spring 2017 Thanks Bell Helicopter for Their Support!



The Department wants to thank Bell Helicopter and alumnus Charley Kilmain for their support of this year's Spring Design Day! Student team winners included Journey on a Gurney, Team Act, Fair Gates, and Spin to Win.



UMD Team Chases Solar-Powered Victory
Two years. Ten contests. One solar-powered house. The Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon is a biennial competition that challenges student teams from universities around the world to design and build a house powered entirely by the sun. The University of Maryland’s Solar Decathlon team will put their design and smart energy innovations to the test this fall in Denver, Colo., in the hopes of winning first place for the second time.

Senior Soophia Ansari Received 2017-2018 Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Malaysia
The assistantship will enable her to teach during her time in Malaysia and collaborate with science teachers at her school to engage students in fun, simple projects to introduce them to using English in the context of science and technology.


Sophomore Hoang Nguyen Wins 2017 National Boren Scholarship
Hoang Nguyen has been awarded a 2017 National Boren Scholarship Award to study abroad for one year at Yonsei University in Korea.





UMD Students Take Top Prize in National Deloitte Case Competition
Among 17 universities represented in the competition, the UMD team was challenged to develop a practical solution for an online clothing retailer to establish brick-and-mortar operations.

Mechanical Engineering students were honored for their dedication and success this semester at the Clark School Spring Awards Ceremonies. Undergraduates Jaime Berez and Haroula Tzamaras were recognized with Clark School Awards highlighting their leadership and scholarship. Junior Aaman Mengis won the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (MTECH) ASPIRE Outstanding Student Research Award for his research with Assistant Professor Ryan Sochol.
