New Hires at the ADRDL
Dr. Nuria Garcia-Fernandez (left) is the new Bench Leader for the SDSU ADRDL Bacteriology section. Dr. Garcia-Fernandez holds a DVM from University of Extremadura (Spain) and a Ph.D. from SDSU. She brings vast diagnostic and research experience to her new role, including molecular detection of Salmonella in egg farms, bovine tuberculosis, and antimicrobial resistance of aerobic and anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria.
Dr Garcia-Fernandez worked previously in the SDSU Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department at VBSD with Dr. David Francis as a postdoctoral researcher on a project involving antimicrobial resistance of intestinal bacteria isolated from pigs fed with growth promotants. More recently she worked at the SDSU Dairy and Food Science Department, investigating formation and removal of biofilms from dairy filtration systems.
In her role as Bench Leader, Nuria participates in the daily routine diagnostic bacteriology cases, as well as collaborative research projects. She also maintains quality systems for the Bacteriology section, and coordinates the development and implementation of new diagnostic tests.
Celena Sass (right), a native of Rapid City, recently joined the SDSU ADRDL receiving section. Celena began at the ADRDL as a student worker in the Molecular Diagnostics section. While there, she split her duties between Molecular Diagnostics and the Receiving office, which was a great springboard to her current position. Celena is responsible for receiving daily diagnostic samples from UPS and other delivery systems, unpacking packages, identifying and labeling samples, and entering sample and test data into the lab information management system. Celena is currently working on completing a BS degree in hospitality management and tourism at SDSU.
