From the Desk of Mr David Smith - Senior Deputy Headmaster

One out of many important things for the whole family to do, is to have dinner together. Researchers began reporting the benefits of family dinner about a decade ago, focusing mainly on how it affects children. Studies show that those families who eat dinner at least 3 or 4 times a week together, benefit in many ways. Dinner is a great time to share the events of the day, discuss news and ideas, just be together and enjoy each other's company.

An August 2014 article on conscientiousness, in Time Magazine by Eric Barker, may well provide a useful topic for dinner time conversation. Research is pointing to conscientiousness as the one-trait-to-rule-them-all in terms of future success, both career-wise and personal. There are no negative things that go along with being conscientiousness. This personality trait is emerging as one of the primary dimensions of successful functioning across the lifespan. Basically conscientiousness is being efficient, organised, neat and systematic; it implies a desire to do a task well. It includes such elements as self-discipline, carefulness, thoroughness, self-organisation, deliberation (the tendency to think carefully before acting), and need for achievement. The Time Magazine article stresses that what is really amazing is just how predictive conscientiousness is of success in all areas of people’s lives. I urge parents to use dinner to talk about issues that will make their sons successful adults.

Over the weekend the Rugby teams play against St John’s College, the Hockey teams play in the Aitken and Boden competitions, the Cross Country runners are competing in two events and the Debaters have a championship league event. Good luck to all the boys representing St David’s in these fixtures. Finally, a wonderful Mothers’ Day to all our mothers for Sunday: I hope the day is a very special one.

GIFT OF THE GIVERS

St David’s Marist Inanda Prep School 200 Buckets Lenten Appeal Initiative 2017

In February of this year a St David’s College mom donated 200 buckets (as part of her St David’s 75th Jubilee Circles of Friendship contribution, and in support of this year’s 200 Years of Marist Bicentenary and 150 Years of Marist Education in South Africa celebration) to be filled with non-perishable food items for families in need.  The Prep School chose to support this project as their 2017 Lenten Appeal initiative,  with the filled buckets to be donated to Gift of the Givers, who are well-placed to identify and deliver the buckets to those communities most in need.  Mrs Cherie Smith ensured that each class received ten of the buckets to fill and every Friday during Lent, in the lead-up to Easter, the boys brought in a specific non-perishable item to contribute to their class buckets.

On Wednesday 10 May the buckets were laid out in the shape of a ‘200’ (to reflect the 200 Years of Marist Bicentenary) and a special Prep School Assembly was held, led by Mr Graeme Edwards, and at which Mark Pillai of Gift of the Givers was the Guest of Honour.  During the Assembly Mr Pillai thanked the boys for their contributions and explained the work of Gift of the Givers (the motto of Gift of the Givers is ‘Best Among People are those who Benefit Mankind’) and how St David’s support through the bucket donations would assist in their work of delivering assistance and humanitarian aid to those most in need.  Mr Pillai congratulated St David’s on the Marist anniversaries being celebrated this year and thanked St David’s for the on-going support, partnership and commitment to helping those less fortunate.

The boys then assisted Gift of the Givers with loading the 200 buckets in to the Gift of the Givers truck as their final act of service for this initiative.

Reflection for the week

BEHOLD, I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS, EVEN TO THE END OF THE AGE, ALLELUAIA.

If Christ lives in you, then although the body be a dead thing in virtue of our guilt, the spirit is a living thing, by virtue of our justification.  And if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Jesus Christ from the dead will give life to your perishable bodies too, for the sake of his Spirit who dwells in you.  Rom 8:10-11.
