Welcome to the weekly Newsletter for parents and carers of students attending John Hanson Community School.

Inspire - Care - Succeed
HEADlines

Dear parents/carers of year 11 students

Your son/daughter may or may not be your first child to make their way through 5 years of secondary education at John Hanson.  However, the point at which 5 years of hard work, tested through GCSE examinations, is going to be a potentially stressful few weeks either way.

At school we will be continuing to work closely with your children to make sure that they are fully prepared and have everything they need to achieve to their full potential in these exams.

However, we cannot ensure their ultimate success on our own, and this is where you come in. I am sure you share my desire for them to do well and you will want to do whatever you can to support a focused and determined drive for success over the next few weeks.  With this in mind, please look out via Parent mail and our social media outlets over the next few days and weeks, for some tips and ideas for how to support your children during this important time.

This just leaves me to say thank you for all your support over the last 5 years. Your children would not be in a position to give of their best and achieve as highly as I know they will without your continuing support.

Regards

Russell Stevens
Acting Headteacher

Year 9 had their County cup final on Monday at Aldershot Town football club. The team went into the game having only conceded in one County cup game this season, which was against last year’s winners, Kings of Winchester. Playing away in the final wasn’t new to the team because they were drawn away in every round of the competition, which makes the run even more impressive.  The team had a couple of knocks going into the game but they were in an upbeat mood ready to learn their lessons from their cup final defeat when they were in year 7.

From the start of the game Calthorpe Park put the team under pressure with their physical presence and speed. The boys struggling to keep possession which put the defence under constant pressure. Although even with Calthorpe’s possession they were unable to convert it into goals. Just before half time Kai Henderson went through and finished well to put us 1-0 up. Unfortunately with the last kick of the half we conceded a penalty which was converted. In the second half the team produced a better display but three goals in a ten minute spell effectively ended the contest. Jack Harvey scored a superb goal to make it 4-2, but with us pushing forward to close the deficit, Calthorpe broke in the last minute to make it 5-2. The boys worked so hard throughout the game but unfortunately under-performed, which made Calthorpe Park worthy winners. The team’s achievements this season have been brilliant and they did the school proud. The team will now look to complete a double in the Salisbury cup final.

As you know, John Hanson have entered an all female team of seventeen into the Cancer Research UK Shine Night Walk on the 23rd September.  This may suggest it’s only a walk, but it is a full marathon distance starting at 9:20pm, raising money for Children’s Cancer!

Thanks to generous donations since last weeks message, we have already raised a whopping £360 towards our £4000 target.

Watch this space over the coming weeks for ways in which you can help us reach our target but below is a link to online online page if you’d like to make a donation:

The School Choir

There has been a school choir meeting regularly since last September on Wednesdays after school from 3.15 until 4.00 pm in the PA block. We sang at the Christmas concert in school last December where some of you might have heard us. We would love to welcome new members and also see some of the old faces back again. We are currently working towards a performance at school this summer and also showing the current Year 6 children what they can get involved in when they come to see the school during the Summer term.

We could also have the opportunity to sing in concerts in Andover, Basingstoke and even London, but we need to increase our numbers so we can produce the sound needed to be able to take part in such events. We currently have 10 regular, committed members, but we need to have double that number to really make a good sound. You don’t have to be able to read music, had singing lessons or have sung in a choir before. Complete beginners are more than welcome to come along and join the fun. We sing all types of music. At the Christmas concert we sang the “Circle of life” from Lion King along with a number of well known Christmas songs. Currently we are singing “So Good” from Wicked, a mash up of Adele’s "Rumour has it" and "Someone like you", “Pure imagination” from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well as others, all songs you will know and enjoy.

Feel free to pop along and join us on a Wednesday, perhaps have a taster session – you’re not committed if you decide “it’s not your thing”. We are hoping students from all years will come along, boys as well as girls to give real depth to the sound of the choir.  Hope to see you soon.
