Update!
Haiti Fall 2017
You may recall the devastation that Haiti experienced from Hurricane Matthew last October. Many areas in the southwest portion of the country were essentially annihilated -- all structures gone, roads rendered impassable, trees uprooted, gardens and live stock swept away, people drowned. Recovery has been extremely slow and laborious.
After several exploratory trips and a time of evaluation, Global Partners identified six locations where chuches would be rebuilt and a seventh that needed extensive roof repair. Teams are being recruited to help with the work. The roof repair at Bainet has been completed. Greg Edmonds is in Haiti this week (May11) with a team that is working at Tete A Boeuf.
The replacement churches will be of the pole barn structure similar to those erected following the earthquake in 2010. Because the devastation resulting from Hurricane Matthew was so severe, there is little infrastructure in the area where the churches will be built. The environment is harsh, the living conditions are spartan, minimal sanitary facilities will likely established on site upon arrival, amenities are non-existent.
Penn-Jersey has scheduled a rebuild team for September 14-24, 2017. The size of the team has been limited to 8-10 persons because of logistical considerations. The current budget is two-fold. Individual budget is $1500 and is depending on airfare. Project budget is $7500 ($6500 for materials, $1000 for Haitian labor). Team meetings have been scheduled at the Penn-Jersey District office for June 17, July 15, August 12, and September 2 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Participation in team meetings is a requirement for participation in the trip.
Commitments for participation, including $800-$950 funding for airfare, must be in hand by July 1. If you are interested, you should mark the meeting dates on your calendar, formulate your funding plan, and submit your Team Member Information form promptly.
Updated information will be available at the Penn-Jersey District Conference on June 7-8, 2017.
