Executive Director Update
Major renovations will commence at our Cortez Apartments in Sunnyvale starting this June and continuing through October. Since 1988, our Semi-Independent Living Program has benefitted dozens of our tenants who live and study at the 6-unit Cortez apartment building. They attend up to two years of daily on-site classroom and individual training in skills of independent living including money management, housekeeping, shopping and cooking, communication skills and anger management, community safety, sexuality and social relationships. Cortez program graduates are placed in affordable housing in their community of choice, and receive continuing support to live with dignity and independence in their own homes.
The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors awarded Federal HUD Community Development Block Grant funds to Greater Opportunities, to help support renovation costs totaling nearly $850,000. Renovations for the 55-year-old building will include improved handicapped accessibility with wheelchair ramps and wheelchair-accessible bathrooms; new energy-efficient interior and exterior lighting; new kitchens, laundry, bathrooms and flooring; a new concrete patio to repair tree root damage; a heat pump to provide heating and cooling in the classroom; new landscaping; new roof and rain gutters; termite and dry rot repairs; new interior and exterior painting; and more. We look forward to providing a much-improved living and skill-training environment for participants in our affordable apartment building.
