Volunteers out-do themselves
Volunteers gather for a group photo before lunch.
On a bright sunny day, 115 generous volunteers arrived in the morning on April 29 to continue building our farm. There were many tasks and so much got done that we have to brag a bit!

Nina and Loletta put together work crews and our snack crew started us off with breakfast treats during check in. Kids and adults worked side by side building raised garden beds for our Seed to Salad teaching program. A team of young volunteers pounded in deer fencing posts. Other volunteers pulled lots of invasive plants out of our creek area in an ongoing process of restoring this habitat. Painters gave our farm stand got a fresh coat inside. Our heartiest helpers filled in the irrigation trench shovelful by shovelful. And we started a compost area, too. Behind the scenes, our lunch crew scurried about to prepare a wonderful lunch for us all, and our talented musicians played for us to top off the day.

Thanks to all who came and gave us your Saturday to help make our farm a thriving place where everyone can belong.
A mural for the farm
Dylan Flint standing on a ladder in front of his completed mural. Our farm got a noteworthy art addition on the Spring Work Day. Volunteer Dylan Flint painted a mural on the farm stand where we plan to sell farm produce to the community. The mural represents everything we need to grow that produce — earth, water, sun, and rain.

Thanks, Dylan, for a wonderful addition and the biggest work of art on the farm!

Yoga and mindfulness come to the farm
Ilana Ingber smiling and holding a chicken on the farm. When Ilana Ingber was looking to expand her work with children to include a summer day camp, she wanted to find a space where nature and beauty could surround her students. Through mindfulness, yoga, and art-making activities, Ilana’s studio fosters student creativity, builds self-esteem and resilience, and teaches children how to love and care for themselves.

We are pleased to partner with Happy HeART Studio and welcomes Ilana and her young students to Costanoa Commons Farm. Ilana says, “The farm is a perfect place for my students to learn how to care for themselves, others, and the earth and to nurture creativity. I can’t wait for morning yoga on the sun-filled deck!”

The Happy HeART Studio will offer a summer day program and will be expanding programming to support parents of children with special needs as well. Learn more about Ilana and her work at http://happyheartstudio.org.
