Nature's Ingredients
Time-lapse
Seeds of Hope... I've been entranced in this book by Jane Goodall. She begins describing her childhood home, where she lived with her mother and aunts while her dad was away at war. She spent a lot of time in the backyard, paying special attention to the plants she found there by painting and studying them. I cannot help but feel connected to this younger version of Jane. I can imagine us both sitting on the grass, examining each flower's details and labeling their parts in our sketchbooks. My addiction to drawing plants continues and is evolving into a search for paint colours that grow all around us.

"But there is so much more to marvel at in the kingdom of plants. I often use the zoom setting of my camera to photograph the exquisite flowering of tiny plants that most people walk past or trample on, not noticing." –Jane Goodall

Plant Pigments
My first go at crushing blueberries and mixing the juice with vinegar.
Supplies for Outdoor Studio—camping trip rescheduled to June!
I was surprised to see baking soda turn bright red when sprinkled on top of turmeric.
Above: A drawing of plant shadows made with charcoal from the fire pit. Below: pigments found on a weekend trip to Washago, Ontario.
Packing, Plants and Unpacking... Due to high water levels, the Outdoor Studio trip had to be rescheduled—but that didn't stop me from doing the experiments I intend to do on the island. I collected plants, crushed out their juices, then mixed them with items from my kitchen to change their hue. I added acids and bases with an eyedropper, mixed them in little containers, labeled the ingredients, then watched them dry to see the results. The process was fascinating—and made me feel like a mad scientist! Follow along with me on Instagram...

Into the Mist
Getting started: transferring the outline with pastel on canvas.
First coat: testing colours and tones.
In Progress... More mountains in the making! This painting was designed for a customer who's looking forward to having a bit of Northern Ontario in his living room. It's going in a new direction from my other mountain murals—instead of allowing the gradual layers to create the illusion of mist, I'm intensionally painting a very misty landscape. Rolling mountains with a river running through it will slowly dissolve into sunken clouds. Pine trees will emerge from the mist and blend into a calm scene of monochromatic greys... more to come. I do custom paintings, always happy to hear about referrals...

Cheery Cherry Blossoms!
Yes, those again! Spring doesn't feel complete to me without a visit to the cherry blossoms. I'll never tire of walking around the trees, staring up at clusters of open flowers, and taking a million photos. Thankfully for you, I've narrowed them down to just two :) Enjoy this beautiful month of windswept petals. Custom designed murals at pamlostracco.com...

Thank you for hearting art!
