ADD PUNCH TO WRITING
WITH VSS (VERY SHORT SENTENCES)

A VSS is a sentence or sentence fragment of about three to five words. Authors insert the occasional VSS into their writing to add suspense, action, or both. See how it works in the excerpt from CURSE OF THE SKULL, below. For more information on this and other elements of the Writer's Craft, click here.

I went up to the front door and got ready to knock. But I stopped.  What was I going to say? You broke into the Countess's house. Now give me the pearls!  Yeah, right.

I darted along the back and tried the patio door.  Locked.  On one side was a basement window, half open already.  I took out my house key and sliced the screen.  Then I pushed the screen up and slid out the half window.  Easy as pie.
