The Chronicle of Middle Level
Education Research

A Message from the Chair

Dear Middle Level Education Researchers,

It always feels good to enter grades and put the final touches on the semester; however, after a short mental break, planning for the fall will begin. I trust you had a productive semester and have plans for a restful summer.

It was good to see many of you at AERA in San Antonio, April 27-May 1. San Antonio is a beautiful city, and as an added bonus, we were able to enjoy Fiesta! San Antonio and the Fiesta Flambeau Parade, America’s largest illuminated parade.

The SIG had a strong program of paper and roundtable sessions thanks to those of you who submitted proposals. I’d like to offer a special word of appreciation to Penny Howell for her leadership as Program Chair and the reviewers, chairs, and discussants for volunteering to assist with the review process. Developing a strong program can only happen when we all work together, and these members did an excellent job identifying papers for each of our sessions. Looking to the future, I encourage each of our members to consider submitting research proposals for AERA 2018 in New York. Proposals are due in mid-July.

At our business meeting, we recognized three council members whose terms ended at the conclusion of the Annual Meeting. Kathleen Brinegar, Kathleen Alley, and Laurie Ramirez were recognized for their service to the SIG, and John Downes, Kristina Falbe, and Margaret Rintamaa were welcomed to their new positions on the MLER SIG Council. Special thanks goes to Vice Chair Cheryl Ellerbrock for her leadership of the Nominations Committee. This fall Cheryl will be developing our ballot for the 2018 election, and she will be seeking nominees for vice chair, secretary, treasurer, council members (3), and graduate student representative. If you have an interest in serving the SIG in a leadership capacity or you know someone who might have an interest, please contact Cheryl, and she will provide the nominees with information about the election. Please note, to be nominated, interested individuals must hold an active membership with AERA and the MLER SIG.

The SIG also had the distinct pleasure of awarding the Graduate Student Award to Dr. Michael Shane Fletcher, a recent graduate of North Carolina State University and current instructor at University of North Carolina Pembroke. Shane was selected for this special recognition for his research entitled Finding Their Voices: A Narrative Inquiry of Sixth-Grade Lumbee Males Who Struggle with Reading. He gave a brief presentation of his work, and I had the pleasure of presenting him with a plaque and $250 in recognition of his selection by the Awards Committee. Congratulations, Shane, and welcome to the MLER SIG! This would be a good time to remind everyone the SIG has three approved awards. Full details for each award are available on our website. I would encourage you to nominate a deserving graduate student or colleague. The deadline for all nominations is January 1.

The business meeting agenda (see PPT and minutes) included announcements from George Johnson of Information Age Publishing as well as the editors of the major middle level research journals. Those in attendance also provided initial feedback regarding the possibility of a new SIG-sponsored national research project. The SIG Executive Committee and Council will review the feedback at an upcoming meeting and discuss how to proceed. Finally, Matthew Moulton, representing Steve Mertens and the Membership and Mentoring Committee, announced plans to reestablish the SIG mentoring program for graduate students and early-career faculty. A new survey and additional details will be distributed at a later date.

As you can tell, we have an active SIG, but that is only possible because of the collective efforts of each of its members. Thank you for your membership in, and continued support of, the MLER SIG, and I hope to see you at AMLE in Philadelphia.

Sincerely,

Shawn A. Faulkner, Ph.D.
