USA Today got its hands on the latest Big Ten tax return, finds that Commish Delany "became fully eligible for future bonus payments pursuant to his employment contract." Those "bonus payments" are reportedly worth $20M, though there's no additional details on the how or when Delany will be awarded the total sum. Delany's overall compensation for the '15 calendar year was $2.4M. Total revenue for the league was up to $483.4M, over double where the number stood in 2010. Distribution per school for its 11 longest-standing members: $34.8M. (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd passes along notes from Big 12 Commish Bowlsby's interview on Sirius/XM yesterday morning & you can guess the subject. "Public perception was very different than private reality. [...] we didn’t invite anybody in. It was an open casting call. [...] there weren’t any possible additions to the conference who would move the needle […] it had more of a sweepstakes deal to it than we’d like." (link - scroll down)
Arizona State AD Anderson earned over $311K in bonuses thanks to the Sun Devils' APR results published earlier in the week. Overall mark of 991 = 12% bonus ($77K+), FB's 971 = 13% bonus ($83K+), MBB's 990 = 10% bonus ($64K+). "Additionally, Anderson receives a one-week salary bonus for each team receiving NCAA recognition for being among the top 10 percent in APR scores in its sport. A record seven teams – men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, women’s tennis, volleyball, gymnastics – reached that threshold, bringing Anderson an additional $86,506." (link)
The MBB Rules Committee recommended a number of changes for the 2017-18 season, though some headliners, like widening the lane, moving to a four quarter format & inching back the 3-point line, were not part of the suggestions. Duquesne HC & committee chair Dambrot says "the game is headed back in the right direction" as scoring per team per game is up six points, on average, in the last two years. Field goal percentage (44.4%) hit its high water mark since the 94-95 campaign. A 10' extension of the coaches box, narrower base on screens & the ability to use the replay monitor for block/charge calls under two minutes in the game are on the recommendation list. CBSSports.com's Norlander on the four quarters concept, "All networks, rules cmte, advertisers have to be on the same page at once b/c of contracts." (link, link)
SBD/SBJ's Smith breaks some news: "The CLC (@CLCLicensing) name is no more. The 35-yr-old agency being rebranded to IMG College Licensing. Announcement coming next week." If you're an SBD subscriber, it looks like Smith penned a bit more, including that the announcement came from Managing Director Moss to partners & clients during a meeting in Nashville. (link, link)
Interim Richmond AD Walsh noncommittal on his interest in the full-time Spiders job, "I’m really just focused on moving the department forward and doing everything I can during this interim period to continue the success of our programs and our student-athletes on and off the field." Walsh notes he & outgoing AD Gill will collaborate on the transition between now & June 30. Indicates some of the UR staff was surprised by Gill's departure, but he's confident the team will continue to do great work. Do any in-house candidates have the staff's support? "I don't know the answer to that." (link)
Eastern Michigan Interim AD Spears is officially headed to Pittsburgh where he'll reunite with former Eagles AD Lyke. The move should come as little surprise, seemingly clear from the moment Spears was named to EMU's AD search committee. Spears will serve as Deputy AD for the Panthers. Lyke: "Christian brings to Pitt a dynamic personality combined with strategic thinking and the ability to build genuine relationships both internally and externally. His natural leadership skills, positive energy and intellect will make a significant impact at Pitt." (link)
Baylor AD Rhoades makes some moves within his staff, hires former Arkansas staffer Sedberry as his new Senior Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Success. Promotes Asst. AD for Personnel & Administration Schrank to Assoc. AD & Athletics Chief of Staff, as well as Asst. AD for Business Operations Hall to Assoc. AD for Financial Services. (link); BU announces it has implemented the 105 structural recommendations stemming from its thorough campus review connected to the incidents of sexual violence. A look at Florida Atlantic FB's financial situation this year as it will generate $610K in guarantee game revenue, the smallest amount for the Owls in the last 10 seasons. AD Chun points to creating "a schedule conducive to success. [...] For where we aspire to be, the reality is those programs don’t do guarantee games. But we have to get into a position where we start consistently winning over time. And then the assumption is that it’s going to impact our home gate, and we’ll make it up on that side." Chun added roughly $1M in staff costs with the hire of HC Kiffin & his new AC staff, does not foresee getting additional student monies, but season tickets sales are "at an all-time high. More. (link); The Owls are also working to go vertical on its new $40M Schmidt Family Complex for Academic & Athletic Excellence. HKS Architects & DPR Construction will team for the project. No official start date yet, but July 14 was initially pegged & Chun says "we're probably still in that same frame." (link)
Arms Race: Idaho gets a $500K commitment from its Alumni Association for a new hoops & events arena that's now moved into the design phase. (link); Georgia has now generated $18M for west end zone revamp project at Sanford Stadium that will get started this month as soon as commencement is complete. Overall sticker price is $63M, should be totally ready by 2018 kick-off. (link); Memphis' new hoops practice digs are moving along & this article includes a quality photo gallery of the project's progress, due to be complete in October. Deputy AD Alnutt: "To see it in person for the first time and really get a feel for the magnitude and the size, it’s impressive. Looking at other comparable facilities, what this place offers and the opportunity to make it that one-stop shop for our student-athletes is phenomenal." (link); The Des Moines Register's Cuellar with a really in-depth piece on, "Nutrition is Iowa's next frontier in college football development's feeding frenzy." At Iowa, spending on student-athlete food has risen from $494K in 2011 to $1.67M last year. Tons more here. (link); San Jose State gets a $120K commitment toward the push to build a new on-campus Baseball facility. (link)

If Los Angeles wins the bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics, UCLA & USC will be heavily highlighted & the IOC's evaluation committee was on campus at both institutions this week to tour athletic facilities. Commission chair Baumann: "These were really very impressive, very impressive because these two beautiful campuses, they have everything for what the Games will be needed for." UCLA would play host to the athletes village & training center, while USC would host the media village & main press center. (link)

New Mexico reverses field on the elimination of its Ski program, for at least the 2017-18 academic year & AD Krebs says support can come by way of Ski fans buying FB season tickets. The Lobo Club will cover $110K of the team's operations next year with more than $400K in donor support making up the gap to ~$600K needed overall. Ski's Twitter account pushed FB ticket sales late this week. (link)
Northern Iowa AD Harris: "We are excited that Valpo has been offered an invitation. Being behind the scenes a little bit and hearing some of the discussions, we feel like as (negotiations) work out, they will be a good fit for our conference. […] The presidents have said that over the next year or so, they want to look at opportunities that may present themselves, to be able to add two additional members. I think that’s yet to be determined. I think the main thing for us will be are there two programs we think will fit? Will they fit athletically, will they fit academically? Do we feel they will bring something significant to the conference that is worthwhile (enough) for us to do that expansion? If those schools, those institutions really show those types of characteristics, then I know our presidents will take a look at whether that’s in the best interest of our conference." Harris also noted the need to drum up more financial support for his Panthers portfolio. (link)
Purdue AD Bobinski wants to keep the MBB in-state rivalry with Indiana at two-games per year, regardless of the Big Ten's scheduling rotation: "IU wants it. We want it. It makes perfect sense from your fan perspective. It makes great sense regionally because there’s great interest in those games. Why wouldn’t you play them twice? There’s going to be television interest in those games more often than not. To have them happen when they happen in the rotation doesn’t seem like we’re putting our best foot forward as a league. I don’t know if across the league there’s wide spread interest among others that have what they believe is a natural rival. If there are, I would be all for that too." HC Painter has long been a supporter of the two games and brought it up again at coaches meetings this week. (link)
Eastern Washington Prez Cullinan says her school will pay Phoenix Philanthropy Group $124K "to assess the university’s fundraising capacity and help plan a comprehensive campaign that will include fundraising for the university’s athletics facilities." PPG's Smits will be on the ground in Cheney at the end of the month to get started on the four-month assessment phase, which will be followed by an eight-month implementation of recommendations phase. Five years ago, EWU announced the Gateway Project, a multi-use facility that, due to lack of donors, never came to fruition. Football's Roos Field is 50 years old and The Spokesman-Review's Allen notes facility upgrades at Montana and Montana State, as well as Idaho joining the Big Sky, as factors motivating the Eagles to up their facilities game. (link)
ESPN's Rittenberg looks at how Wisconsin AD Alvarez finally forgave former Badgers FB HC Bielema for bolting to Arkansas in 2012. Alvarez: "You're surprised, you're ambushed, you weren't anticipating it. We just had won the Big Ten championship, you know? We're going to the Rose Bowl. And then, boom, you get hit between the eyes. ...Sometimes you just bury the hatchet and appreciate guys for who they are and remember the great times we had together, and move forward. Life's too short." The pair, with encouragement from their wives and mutual friends, was reunited at the Hall of Fame Dinner in New York in December 2015. Bielema: "It's like we've never missed a beat. ... We literally always approached things like a double deal. He and I, socially, are so similar. He was my AD, he was my boss, but he was one of the best friends in my life." Lots more on their history and finally from Alvarez: "You only have so many true friends, guys that you can rely on, guys that have your back and guys that you know. You have people that are acquaintances, but people you can really trust, there aren't many of those. When you lose one, that's difficult. So to have him back and the friendship we have makes me feel very good." (link)
More HC Notes: Indiana paid Parker Executive Search "at least" $90K for assistance with the process that led to the hiring of former Dayton MBB HC Miller. Full scope of work doc included in the article. (link); Grambling AD Bryant selects Stillman (DII) MBB HC Jackson as the new Tigers boss. The court trial involving former Iowa Field Hockey HC Griesbaum will not be delayed, as the university had requested. Judge Ovrom: "Counsel and the court explored other dates in July and August 2017, but there were no other three-week periods available for all attorneys and the court during that time, based on previously scheduled trials and commitments. The court finds that the motion to continue should be denied. Defendants have not shown they will not be prejudiced by a short break in the trial." (link); The review into Colorado's handling of the situation surrounding former FB AC Tumpkin, being handled by the aforementioned high-profile Cozen O'Connor pair, won't be ready by next week's regents meeting, but will be well in advance of mid-June. MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
UCLA AD Guerrero provided perspective on the Ball family, "Well, you know, we knew when we recruited Lonzo that there would be certainly a lot of publicity around him both as a player and as a potential professional athlete We also knew that as we went through the recruiting process, that when you recruit the student athlete, you also recruit the family. There’s nothing that we’ve experienced that was of any surprise. [...] We certainly knew it was a distinct possibility he was not going to stay longer than a year and that was true. Everything we hoped and thought that we’d get with Lonzo, we got. … Terrific young man. Did not create one bit of problems for us at UCLA." (link)
As Minnesota brass investigate the leak that led to public reports of a senior athletics official being at the center of a sexual harassment probe, the Star Tribune's Reusse asks, "Gophers bosses outraged over leak? How about the actual harassment?" Thesis: "The response of [BoR Chair] Johnson should have been: 'We’re very upset that another important member of our athletic department has been found by our EOAA office to have engaged in harassing behavior.' The response of Johnson was (in so many words): 'Who was it that ruined our closely held secret that another important member of our athletic department appears to have engaged in harassing behavior?'" (link); Notable Gophers leader Nanne on the situation, "No I'm not worried about fundraising at all. [...] This guy (Handel) is the most popular guy, the most warm, loving, compassionate, caring human being. This is the most absurd thing I've seen in my life, and the damage done to individuals in this day in age when things of this sort come up, when people go forward before there is any real issue, is beyond comprehension." (link)
Conference USA will hold a presser on Tuesday at The Star in Frisco & all signs point to the league hosting its MBB & WBB post-season tourneys in the facility next year. "C-USA commissioner Judy MacLeod, North Texas athletic director Wren Baker, Cowboys Executive Vice President of Business Operations Chad Estis and Frisco Mayor Maher Maso are scheduled to speak at the announcement Tuesday." (link)
Northern Illinois AD Frazier in his latest letter to the Huskies fan base, "It's no secret that it's a tough time in higher education in Illinois right now. The state budget impasse is going into its third year. Our campus recently went through a Program Prioritization process reviewing every department and entity on campus, and the charge made to Huskie Athletics was clear – BECOME MORE SELF-SUSTAINING. […] As we close out the 2016-17 school year – both academically and competitively - and head full speed into 2017-18, this Campaign will be my focus, and the focus of our administrative staff.  You will be hearing much, much more about the Campaign to Sustain in the coming months and beyond. We need your support now, more than ever! Our need is great and the time is now." (link)
Kentucky MBB HC Calipari comments on the NBA Draft Combine, which was held earlier this week, "For the guys, if you think there’s anything here that would hurt you, don’t come. If there’s anything here that would help you, come. If you have to play to help yourself, come. If it doesn’t help you to play, then don’t play." Former Texas student-athletes & NBA star Durant on the event not featuring the premier picks, "Now you’re getting players to where they realize their power, and they’re not doing it and more power to them." (link)
Coastal Carolina has released 300 pages worth of emails & documents connected to the suspension of its Cheerleading squad six weeks ago due to alleged off-time activities. Includes correspondence from AD Hogue to fellow administrators & university officials, back & forth with investigators, emails from cheer parents & team members. One, from a team member to a professor, "I'm sure you have seen all over the news CCU cheerleading. I am a CCU cheerleader and I am being emotionally affected by the news, harassment on campus and social media. I have not been able to function accordingly." Lots more. (link)
