Share Your Thoughts About Healthy Schools

Action for Healthy Kids and several other national organizations are conducting a national survey with school partners to gain a deeper understanding of schools’ motivations and needs to promote healthy school environments and healthy lifestyles for their students. Please complete this survey with input from others at your school (if applicable) who are working on promoting school health by May 26. The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes. The information you provide will impact the resources and services offered to schools.

Create an Effective School Site Wellness Team

Has your school formed a wellness team yet? School site wellness committees bring school staff, families, students, and community members together to address pressing student health issues. These committees represent the unique perspective of the community in a school building, and enable the health priorities and activities put in place to truly reflect the needs and interests of that school. In addition, it ensures district level wellness policies are implemented at the building level. Get started today with Alliance for a Healthier Generation's School Wellness Committee Toolkit!

New Resources from CDC

New resources are now available that provide evidence-based strategies schools can use to manage chronic health conditions and focus on the relationship between chronic health conditions and academic achievement.

“Addressing the Needs of Students with Chronic Health Conditions” is a research brief that provides several strategies and activities schools and school districts can use to focus on the needs of students with chronic health conditions.

“Chronic Health Conditions and Academic Achievement” is a research brief that describes the relationship between students’ chronic health conditions and their academic achievement, based on a review of the scientific literature.

Two new fact sheets: “Managing Chronic Conditions in Schools: The Role of the School Nurse” explains the importance of the school nurse and gives three main roles school nurses often play in managing chronic health conditions. The “Health Insurance for Children: How Schools Can Help” fact sheet provides schools with guidance on how to improve educational outcomes of students by connecting them to health insurance.
