President's Column

Dr. Michele A. L. Villagran

As we wind down another SANDALL year, we have much to celebrate. Join us on Thursday, June 8 at the SANDALL Annual Business meeting to celebrate our accomplishments. CEB is generously sponsoring our luncheon once again. Thank you to CEB! All members are welcome to attend. RSVP by June 1.

We had a great year of program and events, including three webinars which we opened up to other organizations to attend (SLA-SD and AALL California chapters). The 2017 Winter Institute on Library Safety and Security: Protecting Our People and Resources included diverse speakers who shared their expertise on personal safety, active shooter trainings, cybersecurity, and disaster planning. The disaster planning afternoon program was a huge hit with us all rubbing elbows and getting dirty with hands-on handling of materials. It was quite fun and very educational! All educational materials from sessions and the Institute materials are available on our website.

Welcome to our incoming board members, Marianne Sterna (Vice President/President) and Christine Mathias (Treasurer).  We are appreciative of your service to SANDALL. Marianne and Christine will be properly sworn in at the SANDALL Annual Business Meeting.

Thank you to SANDALL board members Lisa Foster, Derek Antler, Laurel Moran and Michele Knapp for their service throughout the year. The time and effort you each put into SANDALL has made our programming and events a success.  We could not do it without you or without our members. I really appreciate all our times together in-person and virtual to plan. There are many opportunities to get involved even beyond the Board. If you are interested in serving on a committee or Chairing a committee, let us know. Review our current Committees and volunteer.

We have many members attending and participating in the upcoming SLA and AALL annual meetings. The SLA annual conference will take place June 16-21 in Phoenix, AZ and the 110th AALL annual meeting & conference, Forgo the Status Quo, will take place July 15-18 in Austin, TX.

I look forward to seeing you at our June business meeting, SLA and AALL. We may be small, but we are mighty and should each be proud to be a member of SANDALL. Have a wonderful summer!

SANDALL “To the Rescue” – Rescue Mission Donation Drive

Lisa Foster, SANDALL Vice President

Thank you to everyone who donated items for the April 2017 San Diego Rescue Mission Donation Drive, helping the homeless men, women and children served by SDRM. We collected a number of boxes and bags of items including clothes, socks, toiletries and items for infants. The staff at SDRM was very grateful to receive the donations.

Urging Law Librarians to Legislative Advocacy

Anna Russell, member of the AALL Government Relations Committee

It has never been easier to communicate with your state and federal representatives, and I would argue, it has never been more important. We have got to be heard more. Our opinions are important because we add a viewpoint that is often about the whole, whether young or old, rich or poor.  We are on the frontlines of access to justice issues. We are the ones that notice digital information disappear in the blink of an eye. Who better to explain the value of legal information and related library resources than us?

And yet, I can think of a couple reasons why one would hesitate to become an advocate even knowing full well that she has equally valuable content to communicate as the next citizen.

I am just one voice, anything I say isn’t going to matter.

That is a tough one. But I would argue that your voice is not alone.  You can’t say it doesn’t matter unless you try (at least once!). I was always impressed by the bundle of sticks metaphor: anyone can break one stick, but put a bundle together, and it becomes exponentially more difficult to break the bundle. As a chapter, as members of the greater California network of law librarians and the national association supporting our same goals, your voice truly is part of a bundle.

I am shy.

Even if you are not shy, I submit it is a bit of a daunting task to cold-call a prestigious state or federal congressional office. Even as you setup to create a passionate but not too passionate email for a legislator, you realize that you are responsible for your recommendations so you want to say them just so.
Perhaps “shyness” or lack of practice or whatever you want to call it may be the greatest challenge to legislative advocacy. Responses I employ upon myself: what’s the worst that can happen? And, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Here’s a new one I just saw by googling: “100% of the shots you don’t take, don’t go in,” Wayne Gretsky.

I am really busy/advocacy would take too long to learn/I don’t want to figure out what to say or where to submit my thoughts.

I am happy to report that online advocacy has never – ever (seriously) been easier. For folks that are also part of AALL, you have access to the Legislative Action Center. You login and simply submit your address, zip code; the database selects your state and federal legislators. Cool.  AND it provides talking points.  Even better.  AND it submits your emails to the appropriate places.  Wow.  Done.

Other helpful services include our own SANDALL government relations chair – Vance Sharp. He is ready to help with any issues we members may have; reach him at vsharp@sdlawlibrary.org. The website govtrack.us is another fantastic source for reaching federal legislators. You select your bill and click the button “Call Congress” – govtrack.us provides instructions and phone numbers.

If after reading my plea for greater legislative advocacy, you reach out to a representative, please contact me; I would love to know how it went. If you are willing to be recognized for your advocacy, please let me know. Now is not the time to be coy! If you will be in Austin this summer, think about meeting other advocates at the Tuesday, July 18 information session, Advocacy Leadership: Skills for Influence and Action.
